12/31/2006, so says Microsoft, at least for now.
XP Pro support to continue until 12/31/2012, minimum.
Anyone hear of a cost effective way to upgrade from Home to Pro? (There's gonna be a lot of pissed consumers if they either need to pay full price [or current upgrade price] for XP Pro... or have to buy a new rig to run Vista.) |

There was a better link where it was discussed that XP Home was a "consumer" software while XP Pro was a "Business Application"... and that consumer software wasn't "entitled" to the same support as a business package. However, Icouldn't find that link right off. I'm sure we'll here more of this later.

Just don't believe all you read.
My friend still runs Windows 2000 and he still has update support, I can't see Microsoft ending the Home version of XP this early seeing they could be slapped with a lawsuit pretty quick.

i updated a friends win 98se the other day after a full reformat. LIke nathan said. I dont think they will be ending it that soon. unless they intend to upgrade to pro, or give a huge discount on windows vista.

Are you sure we're talking about the same thing? 98SE users should always be able to "update" archived stuff to the point where MS stopped "mainstream" and "extended" support... but no new features, no new security udates and no other fixes "beyond a date". MS is saying *that* date for XP Home is Dec, '06. (I believe they've thrown that date out as a trial balloon. Then after everyone complains, they'll extend it another 6-12 months. But still, it's a sucky situation.)
If I'd known it would work like this, I'd have paid the extra $70, or so for XP Pro at the time of purchase even though I didn't need its extra features. |

I believe Win 2000 is still in the "extended support" phase, but is to end soon. Extended support has lasted longer than is propsed for XP Home because Win2K is a "business application" whereas XP Home is "comsumer". |

I find it to be highly unlikely that XP Home will lose support at the end of this year. First off, there's no supporting evidence from MS, and the "mainstream vs. online" support deadline quoted on those websites was put into effect in 2002 (when Vista was supposed to be released in 2004).
It does fit with the new-ish policy, but since it's never been tried, nor any new mention of it with the continuous pushbacks of Vista, I expect that they'll continue support for XP Home for a while.
