Hi there again.
I now have a new PC, and ever since ive had it, ive had some extremely annoying Internet problems. Every 20 minutes - 2 hours it just freezes. This means i have to reboot to get it back up. The mysterious thing is though when this does happen, my Ethernet - USB Converter carrys on flashing normally. Might this indicate its the PC? Im using the same connection as i did with my old one.
My specs now are:
AMD Athlon 3000+
Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
512mb PC3200 RAM
Windows XP SP1
Asus A7N8X 2.0 Mobo
Thanks in advance |

Yep...must have some "gay" piece of equipment that doesn't know how it swings.(so to speak)
Any DSL or cable modem worth having will have ethernet connection. AND...with any "high speed" connection, you should really have a router switch, that of course is ethernet based. _________________ .

Have you tried "repairing" the network connection. (right click the connection name in "network Connections")
If this works, then you might need to assign static IP's and DNS's and GW. _________________ .

"Working fine" with your old PC doesn't matter. If you went from a P3, say, running Windows 98, to a P4 running XP Pro, there's a LOT of differences.
First question, like the other guys said.......why are you using a USB to Ethernet converter? Typically, those are finicky, frequently drop the connection, and don't support the full speed of broadband. If it's because you didn't get a network card, go spend the $20 on one. If it's because your DSL company has a modem with no ethernet connection, have them give you a current, updated modem. Either way, the only assured way of getting a solid connection is with Ethernet. In fact, most cable/DSL modem instructions state flat out that USB should only be used in the case of a machine that does not have or cannot support a network card. It's not designed to be the primary connection.
One other thing to check. When you signed up with your ISP, did they give you an "install disk"? If they did, did you install it on the new machine? If you did......uninstall it. For the most part, the "install disks" given by broadband ISP's are useless, and only spray spyware into your system. Since it seems to be a regular occurence, I'd check your installed programs, and remove anything you don't remember installing. I'm on Optimum, and they're bad about that. The CD they give you installs a program that sends anonymous "usage reports", among other things, to the server. It sounds like you might have a program like that installed, and XP is choking on it, for some reason.
I don't know how long you've had the machine now, but I'd try a fresh install of XP, and DO NOT install any software provided by your ISP. XP will automatically detect the network connection, the modem provides the IP, you should be online immediately. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

My thought is with the modem seeing the converter as the address for the lease, and having problems, with that.
Again, hooking to the internet "raw" prolly be a hosed machine inside the day anyway. my 2¢ _________________ .

I download a lot. Suddenly I started having system hangs when downloading. I believe I have found the culprit but not the soultion. Check you System Event Log for Warning 4226 (TCP). Follow the link and MS will tell you something that starts like this: | Quote: | Explanation
The TCP/IP stack in Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed limits the number of concurrent, incomplete outbound TCP connection attempts. When the limit is reached, subsequent connection attempts are put in a queue and resolved at a fixed rate so that there are only a limited number of connections in the incomplete state. During normal operation, when programs are connecting to available hosts at valid IP addresses, no limit is imposed on the number of connections in the incomplete state. When the number of incomplete connections exceeds the limit, for example, as a result of programs connecting to IP addresses that are not valid, connection-rate limitations are invoked, and this event is logged. |
Anyone know a fix for this?? _________________ Largelylivin (living large was taken)

Have you run a virus scan, an adware scan, and a spyware scan lately?
Use AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, MS' own Spyware cleaner, and AVG Antivirus. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
