This would fall under MALWARE. And will be moved accordingly.
all I can say is WOW.

Okay...I really call it worse than malware in some ways. But since this comes from a "legit" source....

But I believe Sony/CBS will need to do some serious explaining, if this is as it says. I don't feel they should be allowed to get away with it.

Oh gee....I'm relieved.....all I have to do then is go to Sony, request the patch, after giving them information on a form, then I can fix the situation that I shouldn't have been put in in the first place. [/cynical rant]

More to read on the subject.

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/1700AP_Sony_Copy_Protection.html

Here's the patch.

http://updates.xcp-aurora.com/

Side note to Sony Corporation: (if they care)

I'm an Admin for a small US business. This morning I'm forced to change the employee manual to include music CD's in the list of things NOT allowed to be used on company owned computers. My reasoning is the potential for unauthorized use of company owned equipment, by outside parties. The manual has had a long standing ban on internet based music downloads. With this addition it basically bans all music.

Thank you Mr. Sony, for once again, making me the bad guy. blackeye

I don't blame him. This is supposed to be a big reputable company that we can trusted. But they have resorted to the lowest possible denominator in the name of property protection by using software that meets all the requirements of malicious programs. They do all of this at the expense of our rights and property. The company that wrote that software said that they wouldn't use "that" stealthing technique again, but wouldn't refrain from using other and newer ways of doing the same thing. This is an absolute assualt on our computing environment. And I for one am not going to support any company that has anything to do with these techniques. I know in another thread that Sony and Sony/BMG aren't the same. Well yeah they are. They are held by the same parent company. So supporting one is supporting the whole. And neither one is going to get a dime of my money again.

Warning....the patch, I posted previously, is just that, not an uninstaller. SO DON'T USE IT. Perhaps a moderator can de-activate the link.

I have personally put Sony on top of my $h1t list, and will definetly think twice before buying items from any of their units.
Yes, the BMG unit is.....well....they really never have had any trouble filling up my mail box with unsolicited envelopes. Confused

Passing thought....I wonder...did the promotional versions of these music titles contain any of this? You know the ones they give to broadcasters and such? If they didn't contain it, then this was definetely done with knowledge and forethought. If it does, then they've potentially infected lots of radio stations, who schedule their programing via the computer now days. Think

The new, Jack stations are nothing but computers. No DJ's, no program directors, no nothihg...........just an IT guy. CD's aren't sent out to the major stations anymore, they're all networked to the distribution centers. Programming isn't even stored on the station premesis, in most cases. And if you're an indie station, chances are good Sony/BMG wouldn't send you a copy of the single anyway, you're not "in their demographic". Which is why most small stations have gone under or been bought out. In effect, it doesn't matter if the DRM were on the radio station copies, the RIAA owns most of them already.

Interesting FnF....but that kinda asks the same question, as to intent....did they crap in their own nests, too? Or, just consumers...it goes to the intent question.

Just consumers, I'd say..........radio singles aren't physical media anymore, so nothing to install. Basically, it's a high-speed private P2P network. The older Merlin system is the same way, there's no physical media involved, and the stations pay for the right to broadcast.........no DRM needed there. They're also extremely secure, there's no really viable way to pull media off the servers, so theft isn't even an option.

How long did it take? days? The lawsuits are starting to fly, CA and NY have already filed, and Italy is looking into it also.

http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.html

Here's all the titles that contain the "rootkit" that are "recalled."

Of course, this is from Sony's website, so we know we can trust them.

What was 19 or 20 appears to actually be 52. And, these were released only in US and Canada...Because Illegal copies would never be made in China, Mexico or India.

Yup, that's Sony for ya. In somewhat related news, Sony Online Entertainment was forced to give refunds, to everyone who requested, for the Trials of Obi Wan expansion pack for Star Wars Galaxies, due to the fact that promised content used to draw customers into purchasing was remove from the game, 1 day after credit cards were charged.

The last link is an article about the state of Texas suing Sony under its new Anti-Spyware laws.
