wondering about a memory freeing program

It always bugs me when I look at the tast manager, and see maybe a few hundred megs of memory being used by all active programs, and then find that I have over a gig being used. I know a lot of this memory is just garbage, and I'd much rather have it cleared out so that I can use it!

I was wondering if there was a program.. or a registry tweak.. or something along either of those lines that would provide a way to free up memory that is not in use.

Try disabling some progams at start up on msconfig...under the "start up" tab. Just make sure you know what programs you need and dont need on. Also you can uninstall unnecessary programs that you might not need. ie: mouse & keyboard software (only if it doesnt need it and windows can read it.), any other programs that have automatic updates....disable them..leave the most important ones on...Or you can turn them all off and run updates manualy yourself.

How much RAM do you have?

There's a few "free ram" programs out there, but they're basically a waste of time. XP alone usually uses 250-300mb of RAM alone, then add in anything you have running in your taskbar.......can easily hit 400mb or better.

I'm not looking for programs to cut.. I know how to conserve ram.. but when you run some programs, ghosts still remain even after you close it, and they still tie up the memory that the stopped program was using. That's what I'm looking to free up.

I'm running a gig of pc3200 in dual mode, and have a partition of 2 gigs dedicated as a paging file for the system.

What I do with the pagefile..............

Go to your Control Panel, then System, then Advanced tab, then click the Performance Settings button. Then, click Advanced, and set your Page File to a set limit. Set it to double your RAM. If you let Windows manage it, it can get pretty freakin' huge...............it's not really a performance hog, and a larger PF can help if you have low ram, but for 1gb or so, set it to 2056mb min/max, so it stays the same, and you'll see a small performance boost................not a LOT, but enough.

thats already the size I have it set to.. I have a specific partition that is used for nothing but a paging file and adobe scratch disks.

Then don't worry about it, it's not bothering anything. You can set Windows to clear the pagefile at every shutdown/restart, but I wouldn't bother at all.
