|
|
Hello,
It has been a while since I started planning to build my own mini-itx setup to make a network general purpose PC..
The grand day is close now but am still wandering what is better
since I want either a totalu silent PC or very silent one:
Shall I buy and epia eden based motherboard with no fan or is it possible to
use a C3 based board ( M10000 or MII10000) with a big heatsink NO FAN or a silent fan with start/speed controled and under-clock the CPU ?
I have overclocked 1 or 2 x86 cpu successfully in the past by can't find information on possibility to underclock to get less heat.
May be then MII10000 at 500 or 600 mhz is still better than ME6000 in HDD transfert perf.
Thank you all if you can help ! |

Welcome to TN
You should be OK with a VIA C3 Eden 800 or 1000 and a large heatsink.
The sinks and fans that come on them are tiny and in fact don't make a lot of noise. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Hmmm..i dont know much about those boards *shuffling papers*
However the underclock idea is an interesting one. I suppse in theory you could get a chip down low enough to survive without a fan on the HS....however under load i dont know.....
May i ask what your application is? Where it will be placed? What will it be computing? Why silent?
Might help find another solution.... _________________

What TH said.........the VIA chips are OK, but they're not really good media servers, and software compatability is an issue.
If you have the budget, you might want to look toward an AOpen micro-ATX board and a Pentium M. Low heat, low power usage, can be run with a fanless heatpipe setup, and has a TON more power than the VIA. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

or even a AMD XP-M that is underclocked can do the same things. And cost less than the P-M. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

whaoooo several answers, thank you guys for your ideas.
Xal, I am not sure if make a confusion in via processor type ( eden is != from c3)
or if you mean than I can go with regular c3 like in epia m10000 with only one heatsink..
By the way I have seen after this post than via is also offering the MS10000E that has an eden processor running at 1Ghz. This pretty cool and a little more performance than just 600 mhz.
Togglehead, I want to have this unit running all the time to do some simulation on with realtime data on network (trading) but also be able to run some kind of P2P download from time to time. I want it to be silent in order to be able to "forget it" in our appartment.
The idea of micro-atx board is nice with laptop processor style but in this case I have to compare the total price with ATX supply + Mboard + cpu and I am not expecting than the power supply for such a board will be able to be completly
silent unless It cost me a lot.
I am seraching more info to compare micro-atx VS mini-atx solution.. |

Eden is just a codename for the processor core. As far as I know the CPU you mentioned uses the Eden core, I might be wrong tho as I don't deal with them too often.
The VIA 800 runs at the same relative speed as a P3 450 according to benchmarks tho, they are pretty slow processors. But for your intended aplication it should do the job well enough.
Stick arround, this is a great forum and the info here is mostly good _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

well at one point I underclocked my 3.4EE to help compare benchmarks with Josh. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

This little Togglehead big thooth guy look terryfing Very Happy
After some more investigation.. my choice will be the EPIA MS1000E since it looks the micro-ATX setup is quite incertain and probably as expensive and much bigger.
->Undercloking pentium-M or athlon-M will require at least 4W power at 300 Mhz ..
->I have found nothing on underclocking EPIA
Thanks again everybody. |

So far as I am aware the micro ATX boards use scaleable chipsets, meaning they adjust speed according to usage. So they underclock themselves when the load is low.... _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock
