with laptops your better off going through dell, laptops can be bery difficult to replace parts like that yourself, much more complicated than a regular desktop espeically dell laptops.

That's what he said, except he does this all the time for people and won't have trouble. He advised against me doing it, lol....

I wouldn't say dell is any harder of a laptop to work on than any other. They pretty much all suck equal to me.... ....when it comes to working on them, that is. One thing about dell laptops is, parts, it's been my experience that they are better stocked than some others, when it comes to relacement parts.
If your cuz is comfortable doing it, go for it....they aren't bad little machines.

That's good to know, 2o.. I'm looking at one on eBay, a refurbished that will need to be flashed to the 4150, but not sure how high the bids will go on that one. Where's a good place to buy one besides eBay, anybody know?

My computer is at another house right now, but I try to check it daily. I'll be here for a little while tonight, but if I don't write back, that's why. Lots going on, I'll have to elaborate later..

You're on the right track...a refurb or a pull from some one who deals with that stuff...a new one is about $400 (quick search) which prolly ain't worth it, when you consider the cost of new or lightly used ones.

Yeah, he said i'd probably have to spend about $200. Here's the one I'm looking at on eBay:

Boy, you're not kidding, TH!

Update: I won a Dell refurbished motherboard on eBay for less than $150, Very Happy had it overnighted ($72.!!!! Mad ) cuz my cousin was moving to San Diego the next day.

He installed it, and it works GREAT! He advised me to get a cooling pad for it, and I have my eye on one that has 3 fans... eBay of course! I can BIN for $20. They cost $50 at Staples etc. Any advice on brands would be appreciated, guys. Those things do get pretty hot....

what brand of cooling pad were you looking at. I know both targus and antec make nice, small fan cooled models that are USB or battery powered.

This is the one I was looking at, USB powered. The brand is "USA" which sounds a bit generic...? Probly a cheap knock-off, but it's hard to tell from the pictures.

I'll check on the Targus & Antecs on eBay too, thanks Sally!

Probably best to find an external powered one, especially with an older laptop. You'll shorten your battery life running a fan-cooled pad off of the USB drive..........that's assuming your laptop can power them in the first place. Older USB ports didn't provide enough juice to self-power alot of things. My old IBM didn't even have enough power to run a webcam. Shock

I hadn't thought about that, good point FnF. I normally wouldn't use the battery, but you never know. I have a 12v converter in my Van, so I could always plug it in. I'm never far from a plug, but it'd be nice to have a USB/battery combo.

Here's a Targus on ebay, with some great features: I emailed the seller to find out the power situation:

Oops, it has NO power, the seller says it's just a two part item that swivels & keeps the computer up off the desk for air circulation.

I'll keep looking, maybe Targus makes a fan coolpad that swivels too...

Thanks Xal, everybody should have one of these LTs. There's really no end to all the cool toys you can get for these puters. I'm looking at flat screens for the big one now.. My Mom just got one, and it's so neat. *drool* toothy7

Yeah, flatscreens are nice and they have come down alot in price in the last year or so. Try and get one with 16ms response time or better (better for games and movies etc.)

Update: I went ahead an ordered a new Vantec (LPC-305) from Newegg. They don't sell Antec, and this one got the best reviews, so it should be fine. It looks great, has a modulating fan and is also a Perfect fit for the 4150!

Sally, the Targus model that Newegg sells didn't get as good reviews as this one did, hope I did the right thing.

I took your advice, FnF and got one that has dual power options, thru USB & AC. The main battery & spare are both dead in this laptop, now I gotta get one of those! Does it ever end???

(I hope not! This is FUN Very Happy )

RS you have been bitten by the computer hardware and tweaking bug. This is not something that you are going to be able to cure. It will make you buy more and more computer hardware until you have at least 10 pc's in your house and you still want more! May the the Good Lord have mercy on your pocket book!

That too. I refer to the pocket book because thats where the money has to come from. As I try to keep all the balances paid off every month. Or at least every other month.

You're SO right about that, WeaZ..

It's important not to spend more than you make, guys. Credit cards can get out of hand so easily, if you aren't careful, so I make sure not to let my balance go past $4000.00 at a time.
