haha my bad, not all computer stores, im talking about people working at dell, and gateway stores... they get hired, do their little training and dont really give two craps about what they are selling. U obviously care though, u belong to us... so ill change it to all people who work at computer shops and dont belong to TN. :)

Hey, I used to work for Gateway. Mad

You're right, though...only two of us actually knew anything about computers, the rest just knew how to turn them on and play a game or something.

I really wasn't mad or anything, just I get really annoyed when I have customers who come in "thinking" that they know everything about computers, and try to make me look dumb....

I bet some of you can relate.

Actually, I find the opposite true. Almost every time I walk into a computer store, make a tech support call, or so on, I have a hard time convincing the sales/tech guy that yes, I do indeed know a little bit about computers.

while we are on the subject of computer store guys I have a little story to share. I was 12 at the time and I was getting ready to build my first computer... I started young... but my dad decided to buy a compaq presario with an plain amd athlon. at the time P4 were MUCH better than the amd chip. The guy at the store went on telling my dad that this was a great computer and was fast and yada yada yada. I turned around and said this one is better. It was an HP Pavilion 763n model. Then the guy started to try and convince my dad to get the compaq because it was more money. My dad bought the amd after listening to the clerk and we came home and set it up (It was still a pretty big jump for him in technology considering his old one was a P1 system). After about a month of use the thing crashed and best buy sent it out to compaq to have it fixed. Another 2 weeks later we got and and took it back to bb that same day. They shipped it out again. I knew what the problem was. The MOBO and PSU were bad. It kept getting static in the video card slot and wouldn't boot. My dad finally listened to me and traded it in for the one I said to get and we still have it to this day... MOST people who sell computers are only interested in making the sale, they don't care about what is in it. I finally started biulding the computer I have not the summer I was 13.

Go buy one.

1. Floppies aren't dead. In fact, the majority of motherboard makers require them for BIOS updates. And, most recovery/diagnostic software requrire a floppy drive. You need to have one. I keep two in my toolbox, with cables, so I can plug them in if I need to.

2. Memtest boots off of a CD, not a floppy. RUN MEMTEST86. Don't "guess", just do it. Unless you like dropping $100 when you don't have to.

Hey SyncMaster, I don't mean to sound harsh, but there are some very knowlegable people trying to help you out here. I've been following this thread and you've gotten some very sound advice and you would be wise to follow it.
I would if I were you. Just my 2 cents.

i havnt read the entire post, but how many sticks of ram do you have. if you run memtest then you could single out the bad stick or sticks. That way you get a definate answer... If your shure its the ram though then i guess you need to replace it.

*sigh*

That's not a conclusive test. Are you sure the memory was compatible with your gaming rig, did you install it seperately, or with other RAM at different speeds........or is it slower RAM than what's in your other machine? All you're telling me is it runs slower. That doesn't tell you WHY, or which stick, or even IF it's the RAM.

RUN MEMTEST, OR YOU HAVEN'T SOLVED YOUR PROBLEM, and we can't really do anything else to help you.

You're asking the a mechanic to tell you what''s wrong with your car, but you're refusing to put gas in the tank and unlock the doors for him.

good analogy FnF!

this is where you get memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/
you want to get the latest version in this case v1.60 you can either run it off of a floppy CD-ROm or if you can you can make a USB stick formatted as a floppy and then have your computer boot off of that!
