Am installing my 2.80 P4 HT cpu and am not sure whether or not to peel off the rubberized (?) patch off of the bottom of the sink. Intel's site led was no help to me. Any suggestions?

That little black square you're referring to is a thermal pad; it's there to increase the efficiency of thermal transfer between the cpu and the heatsink...basically it helps get the heat from the cpu to the heatsink. Unless you have a tube of Arctic Silver or some other thermal compound, you should just leave the pad on there. It's not the best solution - using AS3 will generally lower your temps by 3-5 degrees C (my experience) - but it's better than not having anything between the cpu and heatsink.

2.8c...do those come standard with a copper-core heatsink? my roommate jsut got one and his did, big diff over the stock aluminum one on my 2.6....

Hope this helps!

Thanks Smixam for your expertise. Your help prevent a costly mistake.

I don't know whether or not the 2.8c heatsink has a copper-core. I will have to investigate.

Adios!

Make sure you take the plastic covering off of the black thermal pad.

plastic melts...
:)

if you don't mind spending ten bucks, buy yourself some arctic silver. it'll do a better job, as smixam stated. it's worth it and will keep your cpu cooler.
