OK, so if anyone remembers I have 2 computers on the opposite sides of the house on different floors. The distance between them is about 75 feet. Anyways, I couldn't get my wireless internet working for a long time with my wifi card. I bought an aftermarket antenna with a 3 foot cable and it worked....for about a month. This was about 5 months ago. And I can't establish a connection on this computer for the life of me (It's the home office computer). The cable modem is upstairs in my room and I'm just getting furious already. I checked and DSL is not availbable in my area because I would rather pay the freaking 20 dollars a month and have a normal reliable connection. I also thought about buying another cable modem from the store and connecting it to the coxial cable running in the basement underneath the office and seeing if that would work. I don't know, would it? There is no possiblity of running a cable from my room to the office. A while back I remember asking the cable company if I can get another modem becasue of this situation, but they told me that requires another IP address and that means more $$$.
What the hell can I do to get a reliable connection because I no clue anymore?

You probably need a wi-fi repeater. 75 feet is a looooong distance, for most wi-fi, that's the maximum you could expect, under ideal circumstances. What with a floor, several walls, electrical wiring, etc.....

Just put it somewhere in between the access point and the wireless card on the remote computer, and it'll bounce the signal around so you get a clear shot. Works the same way as a radio signal repeater.

run some cat5e, or move them closer together.

a second modem will mean another subscription, and more $$$.
if you don't want to run cat5 all the way, you could maybe run it part way and end it with a wireless acces point, if the A/P and the remote PC are at least on the same floor, you should have no problems connecting

I remember this......I just thought of something....
your router/gateway is above the client, correct? The client is in a basement?
The earth is one hell of a ground plane to RF. That is why antennas don't work as well on the ground.....getting a signal into the basement will be nearly impossible.

I know, but it's the first floor which will still be nearly impossible with the distance I'm dealing with here. I may have to think of how to run some cat5e cable, but that's a lot and lot of work here. Maybe a repeater will do the job. We'll see. Sorry I brought it up again but it is really starting to piss me off. I've been playing around with this for almost a year to no avail.

Is there a spare telephone 4 wire cable in each room? You can arrange them to make a nearly cat3 type simplex connection...You can prolly get 10T to go down it...if so, it's enough to internet or move small business files. If all else fails.
