|
|
I have XP Pro and in my lab (at a university) I can't seem to view the other workgroups in my building. I tried the network setup wizard and it's not detecting the other workgroups.
When I had XP home it worked fine, but recently I upgraded to XP Pro with a clean install and now I can't seem to get it to work. One odd thing is a yellow lock that is in the network connection (see picture). Anyone know what this means?

any reason your IP specifically would be blocked?
what kind of network setup does the univ have? _________________

The yellow lock indicates that the Windows Firewall is turned on for that connection. I have had problems with Windows Firewall being on and other computers not detecting my computer.
Try turning that of and see what happens. Also, your uni may have set up some kind of thing that may block external connections (like yours). Going with TH, we need more info. _________________

Yeah.......more info, please. Do you have the workgroup name set properly? Does it need a password for access (ye olde NT login)? Stuff like that. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

My IP isn't blocked. We're given static IP's and a primary and secondary DNS address too. I've tried it with the firewall disabled (and the yellow lock symbol doesn't go away when its off) and that didn't help in locating the network. I've run the network wiz, checked the workgroup name, and nothing changed.
I checked the services to be sure I didn't disable anything important. In fact I'm connected to my computer via remote desktop right now without any issues.
This must be an XP PRO thing, but when I go to the start menu, there is a "windows security" icon that takes me the the windows task manager.
What other info should I post that will help?
Thanks!! |

Oh, your right, the lock did go away, I thought I had tried that, oops. But still can't detect anything other than my own computer when I go to MS Windows Network.
I ran the network diagnostics utility (netsh diag gui) and everything passed. The only thing I can still think of is that about a month or two ago, the IT department swapped out a few network switches, or at least that's what I was told. Could they have changed something so that I can' t network to the other PC's in the building. IT seems unlikely since my lab isn't really that big of a building. Just an idea.... |
