Why am I not surprised?
Apple is riding on the success of the iPod name and image, while the quality of the products is going down the toilet. You've got the G5, which is an absolute disaster, the Mac Mini......an overpriced, 4-years-outdated machine, the iPod Shuffle, which has less function than an old-school Creative flash memory player, now the Nano..........which, from reading, has an LCD display that doesn't have the typical polycarbonate cover over it, to prevent scratches and cracking.
I'm not an Apple basher.......like some folks said. I've owned several Macs, the iPod is an incredible MP3 player, and y'all know I like iTunes on my home machine. But I'll also be the first to say that everything since the original iPod and G4 pretty much suck. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Yeah, I agree with you completely.
This news was the deal breaker for me. I ain't risking £180 for a player whose LCD screen may or may not break and crack while the player itself will definitely scratch. Unless they radically change the design to remove all these flaws I ain't even recommending it to other people. _________________

Again, the Rio Carbon is a Hard Disk based player. I've already got 2 HDD players and don't need a third. Flash player is what I need and at the moment there's nothing out there that I like so I'm just going to wait until there is.
I fancied the Ipod Nano until news of it being very fragile surfaced. I'm still looking at Creative's Zen Nano Plus but the max on that is 1GB, which isn't ideal as I'd want more like 4GB.
We discussed this in this thread already:

Back on topic:
The Ipod Nano issue is becoming very widespread. The BBC have done a story on it:

I'm glad this is becoming a well known issue as this way Apple may finally decide to do something about it and correct these issues making the player worthy of your hard earned cash because at the moment they're selling a poor quality player that's riding on the success of the original Ipod (as FnF rightly said). _________________

I wouldn't hold my breath. It took them close to two years to start replacing defective mobs in iBooks, and bad screens in PowerBooks. That was a nightmare. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Oh, and FtR, Rio has dumped the MP3 player division, they'll not be making them anymore, so I'd be a little leery of buying one, anyway, unless they could positively guarantee service on the product. If not, well.........Creative makes good, flash based players. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

It's been in the news, on several sites.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1853090,00.asp
That's one, it was also on Yahoo, CNET, and CNN even covered it in their Tech News. Since Rio was the originator, it was big news. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Good call Apple!!! Graceful recovery by Apple there, well handled. As for the scratching issue I'm not sure what to think. Maybe just normal wear and tear but it still worries me some say the screen gets scratched to the point where it's hard to read it.
It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside knowing that if I was to buy a Nano (but I prolly won't since I'm still concerned about the scratching issue, need to see one in real life and hold in my hands before i can make a final decision) and the screen broke I could get a replacement thanks to the statement issued by Apple. _________________
