Just interested in which you would prefer, if you were to buy one.
Here is a pic for you to have a look:

Hm.........well, it'd be sortof like choosing my new cell phone.........blue, black, graphite, silver, pink, or purple..........doesn't really matter, it's going inside a leather case to protect it. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Yeah, I don't generally use protective cases all that much. Only when I have to or not using the gadget. I just don't like to hide the gadget in the case and never see it. Seems like a wate of the designer's time. _________________

^^^^ what he said.
It depends on the case you get.....many of them have the iPod thingy on the case as well.
I care less about showing off what the designer came up with, and more about protecting the $200 product I just bought. And considering the crap I dump in my pockets (I AM a drummer, after all.......so lots of little, sharp metal bits and screws) I'd keep that sucker well protected. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

From day one I've always been against Ipods (and apple products in general, great designs tho). I've gone for Creative products only so far (my first Jukebox 3, now a Zen Vision). I wasn't actually planning on buying one but since I've posted I started looking for a flash based player. I mostly cycle a lot and that can put quite a stress on an HD based player even though my JB3 has stood up to the test for well over a year now. I don't want to put my Zen Vision through that and then there are times when I just don't want to take a large player with me with my entire music collection where a 1, 2 or 4gb small player will suffice. I turned to Creative and they don't quite cater for what I'm looking for. They have great flash based players but at the moment their biggest flash based player is only a 1GB, which I can live with but ideally I would like a bit more.
I started to look around and to be honest at the moment it looks like the Ipod nano is one of the better players around for flash, IMO. I still hate the Ipod (original) and the U2 version.
So I'm thinking of buying one now, however, I've got a few issues about the nano that are stopping me hitting the 'Check Out' button. First, the close tie with iTunes software (grrr), second is the built in battery (always been against these) and finally I've always been against apple itself (maybe it's time I swallowed my pride and admitted that, IMO, apple has finally made a product that I like). Finally, the Creative Nano Plus has radio, voice recording and is not tied to any software (viewable as a removable drive) whereas the apple one doesn't have voice recording or radio.
I think I'm just gonna stick around, play with my Zen Vision in the meantime and wait perhaps someone else aside from Apple that will release a flash player that I like or hopefully (this is the ideal for me) Creative will release their Muvo Nano Plus in bigger capacities. We'll see, time will tell. After buying the Zen Vision my audio player budget is down to zero, anyway. Lol. _________________

Zhen, I hate to admit it................
I really like iTunes. Being tied to that isn't a huge issue, as far as I'm concerned. Effortless playlists, AAC is one of the best formats around (FLAC is the only other one that comes close in quality), imports are flawless, and playlists are no-brainers. Plus, with a few tweaks, you can get it to play any file format available.
I don't like Apple computers, they're overpriced crap, but there's a reason the iPod is one of the best, and iTunes is one of them. Great stuff. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

| Itunes is horrible. In their own little attempt to stop piracy, the end user can only register a single ipod with itunes on a single computer. Once registered they cant use other itunes... so what if i want to get my music from my brothers computer. Cant. It sucks. use winamp and their easy library and playlist functions and ur set. |

Those are the kind of, call 'em limitations, problems, nuisance, whatever, I'm trying to avoid. You get enough s*** from your Windows PC during the course of a normal day (come on people, u can back me up here ) so having to figure out workarounds for iTunes with a $200 or so toy isn't my cup of tea.
I haven't actually used iTunes myself (did once for a bout 15 minutes then dumped it) especially with an Ipod so I can't back up what frenchy said but if that is true, then screw the ipod.
With Creative, yea to transfer your music you do need software for SOME players, not all, but you can install it as many times as you want, anywhere you want. Then there's iRiver which is the easiest, I think. Absolutely no software needed (well, one tiny little proggy that builds the database) but to transfer, you need nothing.
Ideally I'd need to give it a test run before I buy it, see what kind of inconvenience that iTunes really is but since noone I know has one I can't really do that.
One other thing that maybe on iTunes' plus side is this. My entire music collection is in MP3, no DRM. If iTunes allows me complete freedom with non-DRM MP3s (i.e. allows to hook up Ipod anywhere I want, on anybody's computer, etc, etc) then I would still consider the Ipod, but only the Nano.
My 2 bucks... _________________

| ya i have the Rio Carbon and its just as small in fact prolly smaler than it, mine is 5GB but the newest one is 6GB, they are cheeper and IMO look better and are better in every way, also they show up as a storage drive so you could prolly tranfer with no software but i use the software provided to tranfer anyway. |

Actually, that's not true. iTunes does up to 5 computers with one iPod. And there's only one little program you need to pull stuff off of an iPod......... That being said, I don't see a problem with the limitations. I mean, how often do you make a physical copy of a CD to leave at every computer you might use? 5 should be enough.
It doesn't bother me much, since I don't actually own an MP3 player.
That, and since iTunes is one of the few legal ways to buy music online, it's got that going for it.
PlaysForSure (DRM for MS-approved MP3 players and sites) is just as limiting, it's just not as widespread yet. Give it another six months to a year, and you'll find yourself in the same boat with your Rio or iRiver. That's why I'm not buying one yet. Rumor has it that once DRM is integrated with Windows-based music services, older MP3 players won't work anymore, at least for new stuff. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

My new Zen Vision (which they have delayed shipment of yet again, FFS!!! This is actually pissing me off big time. Said would ship today and nothing!) has that PlayForSure thing but will never use it. I only rip my own CDs and upload those aswell as Live mixes of DJs (which are legal) so I'm not worried about support being dropped for older players since I'm always ripping my own MP3s.
I'm not too keen on Rio since they're pulling out of the MP3 player market as far as I'm aware (read in an article somewhere, if you're interested I'll dig it up) and I do believe the Rio Carbon is an HDD based player (which is not what I'm looking for as I have already 2 of these). Their flash based 'Forge' goes up to 512mb which is even smaller than Creative. _________________

| one cool thing about the rio flash players is that you can add a mini sd max about 1 gig. site says tested only upto 1gb, but possible it'll work with higher capacity. |

Yeah, Rio aren't bad, except they're giving up on the MP3 player market.
I'm not a real fan of Apple either, but the Ipod nano did grab my attention until all this news of lcd breakages, scratches, etc.
For now I'm just gonna stick to my Creative Zen Vision and my older Jukebox 3 (both HD based). _________________

I have a Creative Nomad Zen Xtra, and I love it. It may be a little big, but that only makes it stand out more... 1 of my friends has a zen micro 4 gig player and that it also a very good little player. It is smaler that Ipod mini, with more features and easier to use. Another person I know has one of those little creative 128 mb player with the usb stick that pops out... I was gonna take it and use it for transeferring data but they wouldn't give it to me _________________ P4 3.2ghz
