Anybody here own a Portable Media Centre? I'm talking about those that play audio & video not just MP3 Player.
I'm looking around to buy one and so far I think the new Creative Zen Vision seems to be the best, IMO.
There's also Creative's Zen PMC but that sucks I think and then there's Archos' offerings (ugly) and Iriver's PMP100 series that are good and was a strong candidate.

Your comments/suggestions/opinions? Thx.

From everything I've heard, the Zen PMC (latest version......I forget the model number) is pretty much top of the heap.

Just out of curiosity, what is the purpose? I can understand taking a bunch of mp3's with you, but why video?

The PMC is rubbish, IMO. The latest one is the Zen Vision and it's the one that I think I'm going to order today, or pre-order to be more precise.

It's not so much for full feature length movies (although I'll have some on there, for sure) but I'm going to use it more for Friends episodes and the like. Watching a funny episode of Friends on a long car journey for a change instead of listening to music would be nice I suppose. Plus then there's the fact that I live gadgets, I sleep gadgets, I drink gadgets, I eat 'em, I am a gadget freak.
Plus I take A LOT of digital photos and the ability to off load these onto a hard disk on the move (the Zen Vision comes with a Compact Flash slot and an adapter to accept things like MMC, SD, Memory sticks, etc) when you run out of space is a real plus!

Yeah........most people that get them have long train or bus commutes, they're great for transferring photos off of a digital cam, blah blah.

I used to use my PPC for the same things, really. Short movies, bigger screen for pics, it just wasn't as good as a dedicated Media Player.

Yeah, I mean are you really gonna watch a movie on this thing when you're at home? Of course not. You can hook it up to the TV but you're only going to do that once in a lifetime at someone's house just to show it off ('cause everybody now has a tv and a player for movies of some sort).

I don't commute, but sometimes, say when I travel to uni or take a long train journey into London it's quite a bore sitting staring out the window. So music is nice. This being a good Media Player is perfect for what I'm going to be using it for.

Kinda looks like it...............

The tv hookup thingy is nice if you have a big photo album. Take it to Mom's for the weekend, and show off all the baby pics and such.

I've kicked around the idea of getting one. It'd be nice if they integrated an e-book reader into them.......I'd probably use that more than anything else.

not that I'm aware of. Only video, audio, and photo.

Oh, one thing to be aware of on these newer models.......DRM. If you have a collection of AAC tunes (I do.....not many, but a few), they won't play........you're limited to whatever DRM the player supports. Make sure it plays all the types of files you want, or plan on spending some time converting them. The Creative is Windows PlaysForSure DRM, so you can only get new stuff from a vendor that sells PFS DRM-coded stuff.

All my music is my own CDs ripped, I don't use DRM so I'm not bothered. I like to record with my own quality using a prefered codec (LAME), etc, etc.

As for text support, the Irivers support text file viewing.

P.s. I ordered the black Zen Vision, finally. Money has been withdrawn from my credit card, now all I have to do is wait...... 14th sept release then a few days for delivery. The wait is killing me already.....

Zhen got Zen..................

That's odd that they'd have taken the money already. Most won't, until the product actually ships.........keep an eye on that order!
