There are several people interested in getting a simple linux distro to run D2OL on.
What we want is to be able to boot from CD and run only D2OL. But we need to have the network active as well as video.
Please post any advice or knowledge. If I can get a set-up built and then burn them to CDs I will be more than happy to share this config and file with anyone that wants it. The only issue I can see with that is it more than likely will be using only one node ID number. And if that is the case what I will do is make a new user named something like Tweaknews Linux Co-op. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

I answered this in another post.......
You can get a stand-alone, boot-from-CD distro of Linux from www.Knoppix.net . It's free to download (I'm doing so as I type), and should do everything you want it to. I gotta buy some blank CD's, then I'll give it a go.
(And yes, it is truly free......no support, no documentation.......or, you can buy the CD for that sortof stuff). _________________ Big enough to scare you |

that distro can also be found here:

I downloaded Mandrake the other night but now I think I will run the CD-Linux on the DC system as well as my small systems. _________________ I tweaked and it tweaked back! So I Tweaked some more!

D2OL needs a r/w area to get work and save it's work.
Interesting idea though....Let's see what we can do. _________________ .

I believe Knoppix does section off a small part for R/W, it would have to........it just allows you to move your OS easily from machine to machine. I'll give it a whirl later on this week, see how it actually works. I do know it's not read-only, it works exactly like a standard install, just without the install bit. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

| I've played around with Knoppix, and I can't figure out how to change the language from German to English. Their site states that the install file is only in German, if anyone else can find out how to change it, it may be more of a benefit to all of us. |

There is a version of the ISO that is set for english as default, but you can change the language, only problem is that it will not save unless you set up a perminant user space on a drive or USB memory stick or something, so you will have to change it each time you boot from the CD. I't probably easier to just download the english version.
I can't remember how to change languages off hand, but I'll look it up later tonight.
I'm still trying to figure out how to compile applications properly, though I can use debian packages as a temp fix around, I still have'nt quite got the hang of actually compiling stuff yet. Guess I't been too many years since I last tried *nix OSs, hell I can't even remember the las time I used a command line interface.

Go to:
www.knoppix.net
Go to the download section.
Click the HTTP or FTP download link.
Pick a server.
Download the distro that has _EN at the end (that'd be English)
Wait for a bit, then burn it to disk.
Easy. You can even get a DVD version, with even more apps pre-compiled, if you have a DVD burner (that'd be in the /DVD sectiion of the download page you go to............)
Not promoting it, by any means, but it looks good...........I'll boot into it tomorrow night, hopefully I'll have some blank CD's by then. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
