PC2100 and PC2700 Playing together

My sister is on her way to college and I am doing some maintenence on her computer and I was wondering if I could put PC 2100 in her system with PC2700. they have same case latency but I don't know the other timings. I need an answer soon because my sister leaves soon.

oh yea forgot to mention, she has 865 chipset, with her memory slots occupied as so

It is on a Sony vaio pc and I don't know what the bios will do.

I don't know for sure if it will work. What typically happens is that the RAM will run only as fast as the slowest stick, but sometimes it'll run even slower.....for example, a friend of mine put a stick of PC3200 in with a stick of PC2700, and the fastest the system would run was at PC2100 speeds.........even at PC2700, it would crash repeatedly.

Probably not worth it to put the 2100 in.

ok, I had two sticks of 2100 left from a computer that had mobo problems and my sis only has 512 mbytes

Prolly not....most of them sony's with an 865 chipset had 2700 in it when it should of had 3200. (imo) NEway it prolly won't work, even if it does, it'll run slower than if you left it out.

Save those sticks for diagnostic stuff. If you don't want them, I might take them off your hands.......at least one of them, anyway. I don't have any slower DDR in my box o' tricks.

^^^^yeah what these guys have said. 2O is correct when saying that it probably should have had PC3200 in it in the first place. So dont install even slower ram and make the system even more starved for bandwidth.
