OK, I'm still debating on what to buy.. I was looking at a DVD recorder with a 160GB HDD, the LiteOn 5045, but I have a HDD in my puter already, so...

I have no problem downloading footage from my Sony HandyCam DRC-DVD200 onto the hard disk with the help of some software that came with the camera....The big question is, would a less expensive DVD recorder suffice for downloading the edited footage from my computer onto a DVD? If so, what cable connection would I need? (USB, Intelli-mover, etc...?)

Of course I'd have to get one with the compatible formats. The Cam is DVD-R, DVD-RW in video mode.

Anybody know?

I'm a little confused as to what you want to do, but my first blush would be to ask "Why don't you just get a dvd burner for your computer and record the edited footage that way?"

Mojo, I'd really like to save money by killing 2 birds with one stone. (sorry Dene) That's a good idea about buying a DVD burner, but I plan to buy a DVD /VCR combo to watch movies regardless. I have a ton of VHS tapes I'm planning to convert to DVD, and a combo unit will work great for that.

I also want to make regular size 5" DVDs from my Sony Handycam (which uses 3" minidiscs) but was told that the DVD drive on my puter won't do it, since it's not a DVD recorder. I checked my system info, and it says DVD drive in the hardware section.

I tried burning one last year, and had problems, then put it aside. I'm just now trying to line things up again with this project, since I have enough for a DVD recorder combo, but not much else.

I figure if I'm going to buy a DVD recorder combo anyway, I'd like to choose the one that's compatible with the HandyCam - formats.

listen, i work at sears in electronics... imagine that. Honest opinion, stay away from dual unit dvd recorders. Even the sony ones we have a lot of returns on because there is just so much in them that can go wrong. Instead of dropping 350-500 bucks on a dual unit recorder, buy a 60 NEC dvd burner for ur computer, invest in 50 bucks of burning software... or pm me, and spend 60 dollars on a dual unit player. thats like 160 bucks versus the price of one of the dual unit recorders. The other problem with them is that they dont always do such a fine job recording... m 2c

Wow, thanks Sean. I was planning to spend as little as possible. That's a good idea about the burner and deck, I'm PM-ing you now::::

BTW, I have one of those NEC 3540A burners. I've burned 8 +R DL disks so far without a hiccup. $53 shipped.

Sean also highly recommends the (internal) NEC, so I'm going shopping for that later tonight. Also, I'm getting a regular Sony DVD/VCR dual unit.

Wow, that was simple, I knew I could depend on TN for some straight answers! .. headbang .. I never buy anything anymore without checking with you all. Thanks so much, Guys!... Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy ..

This one seems to meet the majority of your requirements and i would also highly reccommend Plextor. A+++ products, just a little pricey.

Shock Shock YIIIIIYEEEEEEEEEE, LOOK at that price! You ain't kidding, sheeeeez!

Oh well, the firewire is great, and the external burner means I can switch puters soon without a lot of hassle... sooo, this one looks good. Going out to dinner, I'll check it out more afterwards. Thanks Sean, I was having trouble finding the i.LINK (IEEE 1394) input on the NEC.

THIS looks interesting...... ..The packaging is a bit different, with something on the front that says NEW etc. What do you think, guys? Newegg has this model for $199.00..

I didn't see this NEC model at Newegg.. I probably should buy a new one, not that Plextor on eBay.

(BYTECC NEC ND-3520A 16x External USB 2.0/FireWire/Combo DVD Burner)

http://www.coolerexpress.com/nd3520ame340.html

They offer burning software for this too, what's the easiest? Roxio? Nero? Other?..

I found this Sony DVD HDMI player, not a combo, but I could always pick one up separately. Or fix the ancient Magnavox VCR I already have.. This is the best price I could find, $30 less than most places. I was also looking at the Toshiba SDV593, but it was limited to the DVD-R etc. (minus) formats.

This HDMI stuff would come in handy when I upgrade to the HD TV someday too. All Opinions are welcome! I'm having a blast picking these out, please be patient, lol

honestly, thats way to much to spend, the only place that carries the hd wire that would work with that is radio shack and its 99.99 If you want high quality dvd playback, get some composite video cabels, red green and blue monster cables. If you look at the back of an hd tuner, thats what they transfer in. With that cable you dont get any more lines of resolution and the human eye can not see any difference between the two.

I have a Samsung DVD player I got from Sears for $35..................

Acutally, it's a good player. I remember when I got my first DVD, it was a Panasonic, cost $600, and didn't even have composite video outputs. This one cost $35 (seriously.....no rebates) and outperforms the Panny.

You guys are right, I'll forget the HDMI.

Samsung, eh? I'll have to look at those, FnF. Sean's going to coach me through the NEC DVD Burner installation in the CD Rom drive, and it does sound simple. Let's hope I have enough brain cells,,,

I'm also going to be lazy and get one of those DVD/VCR recorder combos for archiving, and since the NEC is so inexpensive, I'm getting BOTH, lol.
But,,, I'll wait to get that new LiteOn LVC-9015. It's out in August or Sept, but I can't find one for sale yet.. LiteOn gets pretty good reviews so far.

Check these new ones out, it's unbelievable that prices have gotten so low for these things :

nice, and yea, ill get some pics and a detailed explenation for ya. Changing a drive is a great place to start when learning the inards of ur computer. Its real easy to do and will build ur confidence for later projects. Also, ur going to have to remove the cd drive because that is not an extra bay in the picture you sent.

That's Great, thanks Sean. I'll write when it gets here.
Yeah, I figured it wasn't an extra bay cuz it was too small.

Hey, who knows where this might end? I could get so confident,
maybe I can upgrade to a 1G HDD some day...

Ohhhhhh, the posiblities...

Doh!

OK, the Burner's Here! A friend stopped by a little while ago and offered to coach me through the install, so I took advantage of the opportunity.

I made sure to do the actual hands on stuff myself, cause I really was looking forward to it. Anyway, the DVD burner is IN the puter, but I have to go back in to set the jumpers one more time.

This time I'll set the burner as the master...? or the slave...? He didn't seem to know that part.. Also, the DVD burner is now on top.

Oh, first disaster: In the My Computer section, neither DVD icon shows up. Is this because of the jumpers being wrong? The friend left, so I'm on my own...

HELP!!! Sean, are you there?

*thick black smoke starts billowing from the puter* Shock

It should probably be the secondary master. You hard disk will be your primary master, and any other optical should be the secondary slave.
You may also need to go into bios and set that particular channel/drive to auto.

Hey 2Dad! I just got back online.. I got impatient, and opened it back up, and switched the jumpers around so the DVD burner is the secondary master and the DVD drive is the slave..

Nobody was here, so imagine my amazement when both DVDs seem to be ok now.. I tried a DVD movie in each well, and they both work. I did go to the wizard to install the new hardware, but I haven't tried to burn anything yet.

Does this mean I did it right?... Or is there some disaster just waiting to get me?

Thanks Sean! Very Happy I'm so proud!

Sorry you're going through all that bad weather, be careful.. Let's hope you don't lose 'lectricity again!

Here's a couple pix of the innards, please don't laugh guys, it's my first time. I'm really thinking of adding some memory, and my friend said I might have room for two 512s, could that be?

Notice the wrong positioning of the jumpers in this 2nd shot, taken before my last adjustment.
I put the top jumper to the right, and the dvd drive on the bottom in the middle, and it seems to work fine, no smoke this time, lol

PM-ing you now, Sean.. Sorry I disappeared last night, we all went out right after the burner went in.

Firmware download is next, need help with that one!

You might also want to download the aspi drivers from the adaptec website. I know XP comes with it own version but I have always found using the ones from adaptec better.
