|
|
I wonder if anybody knows this one.
I'm looking at DVD recorders, but want to make double sure it's compatible with my 2 year old Sony DCR DVD200 Handycam camcorder. (DVD-R, DVD-RW)
The Liteon LVW-5056 says it has a built in 160GB HDD you can record the camcorder footages directly onto the hard disk from "most" camcorders .
It sounds like what I need, and has a bunch of formats that'll work fine with my Sony , even the IEEE 1394 FireWire/i.LINK, 4 pin FireWire sounds like it's probably fine.
I want to be able to plug the cam directly into the LVW and download onto the 160GB HDD, so I can edit then burn it onto regular size DVD's.
It sounds like a great machine, with lots of super reviews, but I ain't buying another camcorder, so I thought I'd doublecheck with TN before doing anything rash.. I'm a bit concerned about the AC 220 volt required, could that be a misprint? It's at the bottom in red..
Here's some of the Liteon's specs:

Thanks DJ, but 230 voltage is still strange to me. I think these are UK voltage specs (?) Either way, I'm sure it's really 120v since a lot of US companies carry them. 5045, of course I typed it wrong.
This model costs half of what the other ones with a 160GB HDD, like $274. compared to more than twice that amount, so I'm probably going to get this one.
I should probably ask the LiteOn manufacturers if it'll work with the Sony Handycam just to be safe, but I always ask TN first.. _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ÿ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫

Sorry, yeah that is UK.
Read the review of the Liteon a little while ago. Boiled down to this "Liteon were sick of manufacturing the parts for other hdd/dvd+/- players/recorders, so decided to build one themselves".
Was a good review and looked like a nice pice of kit. |

There are two friendly forums that discuss Lite-On & DVD/HD processing in depth.
They are: http://ccgi.mgillespie.plus.com/liteon/smf/index.php
and http://www.techolio.com/forums/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=7
You might want to consider some other formats, functions and collector-oriented hacks for the machine you pick as well. (The 04 ILos were re-badged Lite-Ons and can still be found supercheap at some Walmarts.)
Lite-Ons rep is that quality control is spotty; they have some lemons floating around. Many of the reported probs re HD related. Most of the rest are media related.
Be sure of your warranty status- you'll want exchange, not return & repair for 6 months (about the time most probs are reported). Not to say they are all bad, but some probs reported include discs that go unplayable after a few months, and corrupt HDs when people get fancy.
At techolio- one guy has hacked the metal to move the HD to the computer & back. |

Hey thanks, Mr.Fixit. I still haven't bought one yet, but plan to after much more reading up. Spotty quality control?? That's a big UH OH for me.
I read up on so many DVD recorders a while back, and saw a LOT of complaints about Sony, but not the Lite-ons. Thanks for the heads-up.
I think I'll wait another couple months to give all the different manufacturers a chance to out-do each other.. The way things are going, the price just keeps getting lower with better features. I haven't had time lately to even watch a movie, much less record one! _________________ ♫ Josh Awards=+12 -5 =7 ~HaM=3~ Ж=3 ~Zero_Fresh=3~Burgundian Award=1~JW=4 ~ ÿ =1~Sean=1~Dene=3 ~Putale Kudos=1~GMoney=4~Sally Grommit Award=1~Bunni & Badger=2 Gold Stars ♫
