Didn't we do this before?
Ok, best thing to do: Go to the website for the maker of the drive you want to clone TO, and get their software (Maxblast for Maxtor, DataLifeGuard for WD, I forget what it is for Seagate).
Install the drive you want to clone TO in the slave postion, reboot with the floppy for bootable CD you'll make from the software, follow the steps to clone your drive to the new "master" drive, wait for it to finish, then stick the new drive in the Master position.
I usually recommend the manufacturer's software over anything like Ghost or DriveImage, just because the manufacturer's software does a complete low-level format, partition, and re-format on the new drive. They also don't screw up as much, work with SATA drives without a hitch, and are FREE. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

What "fuss" said is correct, however let me add this....
If either of your "copy from" or "copy to" drive is Western Digital, you're in luck. The WD Data Lifeguard for Windows is the fastest and slickest.... while Seagate's is cumbersome and awkward.
Using WD's Data Lifeguard, you can set both of your drives to Cable Select if you have a cable select IDE cable and you'll never have to mess with HD jumpers again. |

| Forgot to mention... if you use WD's Data Lifeguard for Windows, you don't have to use the boot floppy at all. |

| If you have WD drive... Data Lifeguard clones at approximately 1G/minute on two of my machines. So, you cloning should take approximately 60 minutes. |

| I've found that Maxblast 3 doesn't work for me any longer, either. However Maxblast 4 has worked for me from the floppy boot.... but it takes about 4-5X longer to copy than WD Data Lifeguard for Windows. |

One final note.....
WD Data Lifeguard for Windows is soooooo good, it's worth buying WD just to get access to the copy software.
OK, you just bought a new HD, and neither of yours is WD..... Buy another one! This time, WD... that way you can use the cloning software every time so long as either the "copy from" or "copy to" HD is the WD. (If you have important data, you need a backup routine with at least 3 media devices.... I rotate HDs about twice a month + as needed to keep up to date.... 4HDs for each computer.) |

| You shoudl have received a CD with the WD drive. The cloning program is on it. Or, you can download it in an .exe file from WD's website. I've done both, and they work just fine. |

If you set it up correctly, about 1 hour... depending upon your computer's speed. |

That's wierd that you couldn't get MaxBlast to boot.......did you try it from a bootable CD? Last time I used MaxBlast, it only took about 2 hours to clone almost 100gb of data to a new drive, worked without a hitch. I've used it quite a few times.
WD is a bit faster, though. While I do agree that CS usually works for the drive settings, I don't recommend doing it. Not all mobos "read" CS settings exactly right. In fact, certain brands/models recommend that you DON'T use the CS setting, as it can lead to problems in the BIOS. For PATA, I still suggest master/slave settings. SATA doesn't apply, of course. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

You did use two seperate cables and hook one drive as master to the Pri IDE and the other drive as master on the sec IDE did'nt you? otherwise it would take a LONG time to copy over data if you used the same cable with both drives.

If you use the boot floppy with Maxblast 4, you set both HDs as Master (jumper) and connect in the Master position on both primary and secondary IDE channel.
If you use WD Data Lifeguard for Windows, you only use the primary channel... one in the Master position, the other in the Slave position.... either jumpered as Master and Slave, or both Cable Select with a Cable Select cable.... presuming your BIOS doesn't object to the CS use. |
