| alot of ppl said for the emmense size of the cooler it didnt perform as well as it should have... and the other thing was... the leverage placed on the mother board.. actually ripped the zif socket off the mobo when the computer was dropped or something... but its huge and doesnt cool too well |

I agree.....I haven't read too much good about it (other than it did a slightly better job than the standard cooler), but I've never used one myself. Be the first, try it out, and see what you think.
From a technical standpoint, with the horizontal fins, the fan isn't doing much to take heat away from them, it's only affecting the top two or three fins, while the rest rely on air cooling. I much prefer a vertical fin placement, so the fan is touching all the fins, plus pulling air from in-between them. I don't think, from a purely physical standpoint, that it'd do much more than a stock cooler.
But, like I said, I haven't used one, so I'm not sure. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

| well....its true.....it suxs. i spent $40.00 for a standerd cooling. but what i noticed is that the whole reason for the lack of cooling is the fan! The heat does distribute evenly but the fan is not helping....is anyone familier with the condencer of an A/C unit of a house? It sits outside of the house? well the fan in it is just a regular three or four blade fan that pulls air through the fins in and out the top. I'l see what i can do and some pics. Maybe a torrnato fan will work just fine! |

| so that things blower style doesnt do jack for cooling? except create air turbulance or what... ? does it flow much air at all? |

i think fusfeathers has hit the nail on the head.....or...the cooler on the fin?.....*smack*
anyway, what about on of the cyclindrical fans from the coolermast jet 4, or the aero 7 or something......you think it would fit inside the inner diameter? _________________

| yeah but th.. how would that help putting a aero blower/ etc into it.. doesnt it already have a blower style fan in it.. what if u just mounted a fan right on the side or something |

Hey guys. I just got to the Gigabyte 3D HS/F and finnished the mod on it.
http://community.webshots.com/album/348501982RhljpO
The first pic shows were I used the lower base portion of the fan assembly to cover the hole at the bottom. i used aluminum foil to cover the holes. I removed the fan and all its guts. The second pic shows were i mounted a 80mm-90mm addapter (90mm side up) to put a 90mm tornado fan. I used krazy glue to mount it. Pic three is the 90mm fan on it. It s air flow will suck air in from the top forcing air in to the HS and out the sides thus (maybe) cooling anything else around it. The fan is rated to have 120cfm. Its not realy a Tornado brand fan but it BLOWS! I turned it on on my table and its not as loud as the REAL 80mm Tornado i have. You can really feel the air blowing out the sides of the fins about a foot and a half away on the table at full speed. Pic 4 is a top view.
Well thats all i have for now. Ive been working too much to test it out. Maybe by the end of this week I should have some test results. _________________ Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe, AM2 4600 x2, 150GB Raptor Exteme, 7900GTX in SLI Corsair XMS DDR2 CAS3, Custom DD Water Cooling |

Actually, I have that same cooler, it works well for overclocking with air, but it is USELESS for keeping an already cool running system any cooler than a standard HSF. I think the reason for this is the type of working fluid they used for the heatpipe. The hotter the pipe gets, the better it conducts heat away. I think the boiling point of the working fluid is way too high to be of any use as anything other than a nice looking stock cooler.
Having said that, It has proved to be good for my OCed XP chip, sofar I have a 3000+ at 3500+ @ 1.75V rock solid. 56C full load
Only prob I had was putting the case on made the temps rise up to 63 / 65C ! so the system is running with the case off and it's nice and cool. This probably because the fan is a bit weak for serious use, but an decent fan with a good airflow would make a world of difference.
Noxide, For that Mod you made with the better fan, I would recomend that you block the bottom of the fins off, so all the air is directed THROUGH the fins, not just across them. Should help get the heat away better. the fins were designed to be used this way (hence the blower type fan in the center).

I did bolck that big a$$ hole at the bottom. and the air flows sweet through the fins. All the fins. I just need to test it out now. _________________ Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe, AM2 4600 x2, 150GB Raptor Exteme, 7900GTX in SLI Corsair XMS DDR2 CAS3, Custom DD Water Cooling |

Defo post back about any improved performance from that mod, I'm thinking of using one of these heatsinks to cool a peltier, so ANY gain would be an advantage for me.
Good luck with the testing.

Ok S.S. ...... I did alittle testing tonight and the mod seems to work FREAKEN GREAT!! I went to Frys Electronics and bought the biggest peltier they had. Its rated 12v-15v and 130 watts. I used a car battery charger to run it cuz none of the psu would hold up..Not even my Antec 550. I used my wifes hair iron for heat at 70c. My laser temp gauge was broke so i tried to impervies with my kids thermometer lol. To make the story short, it moves the heat away great. I left the peltier on and the fan off to see how hot the hs would get. The thermometer read about 130F. when i kicked on the fan at full it dropped to 85F on the hs. Im not sure how accuret that thermometer is but to the touch, it was way cooler. Hell even the cpu base felt a hell of alot cooler and the base was the hottest. so if you want, try it yourself. From what i seen and felt..... that four pipe system works realy good. So the more heat you throw at it the more air flow is need (as of all hs/f assemblies). In other words, it should handle any heat you throw at it as long as you got the air flow. Oh btw, I was in an A/Ced room.
I'll doo some more accu. testing and get some pics later when i get my laser temp termometer working. _________________ Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe, AM2 4600 x2, 150GB Raptor Exteme, 7900GTX in SLI Corsair XMS DDR2 CAS3, Custom DD Water Cooling |

Excelent! cheers for posting back with that. I have a 172W pelt to be used with this cooler. I think I should be able to tweak it to my needs.
I'm experimenting with a new way to run a peltier / water cooling set up. If it pans out, it should provide damned good cooling for a water block + TEC on a CPU, should lower temps a bit, but condensation should'nt be too much of a problem.
