ok, so im going to buy a thermalright xp-90C and a enermax multi function control panel (USB + fire wire + 9 in 1 card reader + 2x fan rpm/speed control), and i want to get a fan for my xp-90c, but i want to be able to control the fan on the Heat sink. unfortunatley the one i was looking at (the vantec 92mm tornado) comes with a 4 pin molex for power and a 3 pin for rpm monitor, now this tells me im not gonna be able to hook it up to my fan controller thing right? basically, i know my xp-90c doesnt even need a fan but when i OC i am gonna want to use a powerful one, (myu mobo = DFI lan party SLI-DR +amd 3000+ winchesteR), so can anyone think of a good fan which ill be able to control? maybe my bios can control it but i dont think so, you see with the CMOS reloaded feature from DFI you save diff bios settings, IE one for OC and one for standard, i want to make it so that in standard the fan doesnt come on, but in OC it does come on, and is variable depending on the OC, maybe i can do this with temp?> i donno, someone help me please, which fan? how do i set this up,. thanks _________________ My setupd:

The 3 pin connecter should connect to the fan controller and allow you to adjust the fan from there or do you mean it has a 3 pin connecter with 1 wire for rpm monitoring and the 4 pin molex for power?

What makes you say the XP-90C doesn't need a fan
anyway....get yourself a Panaflo fan, they have very good airflow, and they don't sound like a 747 on approach _________________ Yeah....... ok |

yea thats what i mean, it has a 4 pin molex for power, and a 3 pin for only rpm monitor... maybe i could mod it somehow to make a power + ground go through the 3 pin connector on the fan controller? but id rather the mobo controls it based on temp yaknow,
i thought about the panaflow, and it jsut cant compare to the tornado in terms of moving air, and the noise i dont worry about so much i listen to loud music..lol
and sorry but i cant see where i posted my other thread? _________________ My setupd:

whatever you do...just make sure you NEVER run your computer without a fan running on the CPU. reading your first post, it sounds like you want to have the computer idle with the fan not running at all, this is NOT a good idea _________________ Yeah....... ok |

| actualy you can run your computer without a fan on the CPU, there are a few Coolers out there that dont use fans at all. i know VooDoo has a case thats a whole heatsink and uses heatpipes to xfer all the heat from the cpu vid card and all componets to the air from the case. there is also something from thermaltake i think, but ya a XP-90 needs a fan to cool properly. |

The VooDoo case is a Zalman Silent Case, and it uses heatpipes to transfer heat from the CPU and GPU to the case walls, the hard drives are also mounted directly to the case walls, and it uses a proprietary fanless PSU. A wee bit different from your standard case. It also weighs close to 50 pounds.
Simple solution for you, AB. Get a four pin to three pin converter. CompUSA has them, Xoxide sells them, heck, even NewEgg has them.
What you need to pay attention to is the voltage rating on the controller. If the fan you get for your XP90 is too powerful, you'll blow the fan controller, probably while you're in the middle of a good gaming session, and don't notice right away.
You might try looking for a fan that has its own speed controller (like my CoolerMaster Jet4), that either mounts in a PCI slot, in a 3.5" bay, or if you're handy with a drill, just about anywhere you'd want it. At any rate, no fan controller completely shuts off the fan, the best you'll get is 1/4 speed (approximately), so it'll still be running. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

good idea with the 4 to 3 pin, but im thinking im gonnna go with the tornado and just connect the seperate rpm monitror wire to the fan controller slot and then splice the ground and a hot wire (5v or 12v? i think this fan uses both.. but which one... prolly the 12v right?) anyway connect one of those wires + ground as the other 2 to make the 3 pin connection to the F/C, thanks. how does that sound.? _________________ My setupd:

ok so i found out that the tornado has only 3 wires, beige (rpm monitor on 3 pin alone ) and red and black, red + black is the 5V line right? cause with this i could ismply just cut the fans 4 pin connector off and put the red and black through the 3 pin and plug it all into the fan controller right? anyone see any problems with this? thanks _________________ My setupd:
