I hope so, Xal, formerly known as Karl.. It should be an improvement anyway.. The speakers will be replaced ASAP, now I'm looking at Kenwood... I'll keep you guys posted on everything... .

Cold, TH? .. ..We done be down here in the South, so we's stays pretty warm, lol.. Sometimes it goes down to 40, Shock and once in a blue moon 30. I'll be careful and stay home when it does, lol.

Here's a pix of the "new" subwoofie, notice the enclosure is 3/4" sealed plywood. He offered to carpet it, and install it too, so it was a good deal @ $150. It's 250 watts RMS for sure, but I can add another one later if I need it..

So much for my fitting it into a 10.5" x 9" space, lolol...It's 34" x 18", and 8" at the bottom, 4.5" at the top. I'll find room for it... Very Happy

I sure was happy till it turned out the sub was blown, yikes! The $$ was cheerfully refunded, but now I'm back to page one...

Speaking of which......

Could you guys please look at this page & tell me what you think?

....http://www.crutchfield.com/S-QtsoR37rlIR/cgi-bin/ProdGroup.asp?g=67700&avf=Y

I have to get a Q-Logic enclosure too. Yeah, I know that nobody likes those things, but I'm in a spot now.

I wonder about those 2 Sony's for the price of one....? I'd like to stay 12" if possible too.

Man, that freaked me out when that JL did that.... ....Oh well The 2 Blaupunkt look interesting too..

I took FnF's advice and got the Bazooka BT1014 at Crutchfield's, look:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-y8eIAzKyZ2f/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=510&id=detailed_info&i=204BT1014

The guy said I can carpet the outside to match the van too. It'll be here Tuesday or Wednesday, hope I have time to install it before I go offline for the move... if not I'll be back soon... Thanks for all your help guys,,,

HOLY MONKEY KEISTERS!!!

The Bazooka arrived a few days ago, and I called to see how much installation would cost at the same place that put in the stereo.. $90 to $120!!!!

YIKES!!!!!!!

They said it's expensive, cause the wires have to be hidden, & be someplace where they won't be cut or broken, with the battery cable going through the firewall, as opposed to under the frame, where it might get wet.

So now that I know all this, we'll put the d^M thing in ourselves, lol

I'll keep you guys posted, it might be a while till we get to it because of moving and all next week..

I've never done it any other way BUT by myself. You can get a good sub/amp install wire kit from Walmart at a very good price. You'll find it MUCH less expensive—and usually of equal quality to—those sold by an audio shop.
In theory, you should run the signal cables and the power cable on opposite sides of the vehicle, but since it is a subwoofer, you should be just fine doing it together (less panels to take off!). Going through the firewall is really the only way to go. You will want to try to "share" a gromit with an existing harness that passes through the firewall. A long poking device is usually adequete. In the past, some sort of sharpened metal rod has worked for me to probe through. If your van has a "dog house" that pulls off, you maybe able to sneak it through there...but keep it away from anything hot (i.e. exhaust manifolds, etc.). Othwerwise, depending up on you vehicle, you are probably able to route the wires parallel to other vehicle wires under the door sils and along the side. Conduit is always a good idea on the wires. Also, be sure to ground the amp well to the chassis. You should be able to do this behind one of the panels that you will have off anyway.

You're right, it's best to do it yourself ,,, if you know how. My plan was to watch & learn, like I did the stereo install, but it sounds fairly easy. Thanks for the great advice, Sally. I know this system won't be like yours, but at least it won't be as wimpy.

Rats, I should have checked Wal-Mart first, I already bought the wire kit for $60, but at least I know it's pretty good.

HEY, good news...Our across-the-street neighbors at the new house came over to introduce themselves yesterday, and the subject of sound systems came up, mainly cause you can hear them a mile away..

it turns out they install competition systems as a hobby, and offered to put my subwoofie in the Van...TONIGHT!!! ... Very Happy ...I checked out their cars, and they agree with you Sally, on going thru the firewall, so I feel pretty good about it. We'll check for existing gromets & doghouses too..

You guys should hear their systems, such small cars,, but what a huge sound! Shock One guy even has the multi-color neon light show going on under the frame, lol.. Not sure I want that much attention, just want some great bass with my rock & roll... I'm sure the speakers will be the next to go too.

I'll post pix when it's all done, can't wait! Thanks again Sally, and everybody for your help on this, it really makes me feel like I almost know what I'm doing, lol...

Sorry it took so long to post the great results of the system, been busy with the new house.. FnF was right, for the money, the Bazooka is great, good thumping bass, but room saving too. Happy Very Happy Very Happy happy! Very Happy Very Happy

It took 5 hours for the 3 guys to do, one one each task.. The doghouse came out, dash and side floor panels for the wires, and 20 beers & 5 large pizza later, it was done. The directions said to place it 2" to 4" from a wall or corner, and it's about 4" away from it. I added the carpet to match, but will get a better one later.

Here's the pix: (10" speaker, capable of handling 200 watts, hooked to the 190 watt bridged Kicker Impulse amp which I forgot to photograph...later!:)

Looks good!

Yeah, installing stuff like that isn't hard, really, it's just time-consuming, you need the proper tools (not just some vice-grips and duct tape), and several hours to kill. I'm not sure what these guys did, but in alot of cases, they'll either put a fuse block or a quick-connect setup under the dash, so if you decide to change amps later, it's that much less work.....I did that in my old Torino, way back when. I was only running a sub amp at the time, but after I ran the main power wire through the firewall, I put a 3 channel fuse block in the trunk, next to the sub amp. Then, when I added two amps later, it was eaaaaasssssssssyyyyyyyy......just plug 'em in, and wire the speakers (I also did the front speaker wiring at the same time, just didn't connect them to anything.)

But yeah, it looks good, it'll give the ol' van some GIT 'ER DONE!
