looking around I sighted this model
http://www.alienware.com/Configurator_Pages/aurora_5500.aspx?SysCode=PC-AURORA-5500&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

After adding stuff onto I got around 1500-1600$, about the max I am willing to put into it. I do not need a monitor, just the tower, nor any other extra devices (might go ahead and get the extra kb/mouse)

(list of what I have)

"?" means should I bother or I have no idea if I need it

Warranty: 1 year

OS: WinXP

AlienRespawn: ?

Chassis: Black (current monitor is black)

Cable Management: ?

Power Supply: the cheaper one, is it powerful at all or should I upgrade to the larger one?

ALX Heavy Duty Power Cable: ?

Processor: AMD 3500+

Mother Board: ABIT AV8 - VIA K8T800 Pro Motherboard

Memory: 1gig....but I do have 3 sticks of extra DDR 512mb memory laying around when I ordered parts to fix my computer, so not sure if I should buy the memory (or atleast some) or try mine out....

Graphics card: GeForce™ 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 (sufficient?)

Video optimizer: ? (sounds good, but am pretty sure there is a similar program that is downloadable somewhere)

Chassis upgrades: I'll pass......unless "AlienIce™ 2.0 Video Cooling System - Astral Blue" is as good as it sounds. Don't really care for the dampening, just the cooling.

System Drive: 120gb atleast...maybe 160, but for sure 120

Storage Drive: ?

Optical Drive one: NEC (this can read and do everything right? I only need one drive as long as it does CD-Rom and DVD, which includes burning for both)

Op Dr 2: none

Floppy Drive: blah blah

Blank Media: You gotta buy this to burn??? Or just some marketing crap? I use DVDs from office depot, usually Memorex.

Sound Card: Integrated 5.1 High-Performance Audio with Digital Out (not sure if current card is =, <, or >)

NC: Integrated High Performance Gigabit Ethernet

More ALX cable: ?

Modem: (I don't need this at all right? I got DSL) none I guess...

only other thing would be Norton, but I think I got that somewhere...and I have ad-ware SE on my comp right now.

after looking at what is offered I added my thoughts for the system. When I priced it, it came out to be about $1730.00. That would be a very nice rig!

"?" means should I bother or I have no idea if I need it

Warranty: 1 year------thats fine

OS: WinXP-----go with XP Pro

AlienRespawn: ?-----its worth getting in case you need to reload the OS

Chassis: Black (current monitor is black)-----good

Cable Management: ?-----not worth buying from them

Power Supply: the cheaper one, is it powerful at all or should I upgrade to the larger one?-----the standard one is fine but the upgrade is a great psu

ALX Heavy Duty Power Cable: ?-----not worth the cost

Processor: AMD 3500+

Mother Board: ABIT AV8 - VIA K8T800 Pro Motherboard

Memory: 1gig....but I do have 3 sticks of extra DDR 512mb memory laying around when I ordered parts to fix my computer, so not sure if I should buy the memory (or atleast some) or try mine out....-----go with the low latency 1 gig kit and you will be fine

Graphics card: GeForce™ 6800 GT 256MB DDR3 (sufficient?)-----Great card

Video optimizer: ? (sounds good, but am pretty sure there is a similar program that is downloadable somewhere)-----this is a worthwhile feature!

Chassis upgrades: I'll pass......unless "AlienIce™ 2.0 Video Cooling System - Astral Blue" is as good as it sounds. Don't really care for the dampening, just the cooling.-----if you are interested in overclocking the vid card then this would be a good idea

System Drive: 120gb atleast...maybe 160, but for sure 120

Storage Drive: ?-----thats up to you

Optical Drive one: NEC (this can read and do everything right? I only need one drive as long as it does CD-Rom and DVD, which includes burning for both)-----good enough

Op Dr 2: none

Floppy Drive: blah blah

Blank Media: You gotta buy this to burn??? Or just some marketing crap? I use DVDs from office depot, usually Memorex.-----just use the stuf you normally use

Sound Card: Integrated 5.1 High-Performance Audio with Digital Out (not sure if current card is =, <, or >)-----integrated is fine

NC: Integrated High Performance Gigabit Ethernet

More ALX cable: ?-----not needed

Modem: (I don't need this at all right? I got DSL) none I guess...-----who uses these anymore for a desktop system?

only other thing would be Norton, but I think I got that somewhere...and I have ad-ware SE on my comp right now.-----I dont suggest norton as there are better free Anti-virus progs out there.

Agreed with Weaz on all points, except the modem. I keep one around (not in my system at the moment, but avaiable) in case your DSL were to go down for an extended period, or you move and cant' get broadband for awhile........or worst case, you move somewhere where broadband isn't even available. I've used my modem a few times in the last year. Might as well get it from Alienware, it's cheaper than buying one aftermarket.

Thanks guys, I was talking to one guy about a modem, and he said it is good for faxes if you got DSL, otherwise it would only serve as a coaster for your drink. :)

Yeah.........but like I said, it's always good to have one around......just like the floppy drive that nobody needs......until you need a BIOS flash. Emergency gear is always good.

dont mean to put you off the alienware...as they are great computers...but if you are capable of putting it together yourself...do that, you will save alot of money and be able to afford a better setup...just my 2p though.
