Hey guys,
you all have had some good advice in the past so I hope yall can help me out of this jam. My cpu temps have skyrocketed. I have done everything I can think of to correct the heat and NOTHING is working. I have:

1. checked all fans, they all work fine.
2. made sure i was getting adequate ventilation (no messy wires)
3. dropped the cpu bus speed from 200 to 150
4. turned off AI overclocking (standard spec on my board)
5. went crazy.

There does not seem to be a way to manually set the Vcore on my board. It has a list of options, but they are all preset, and HIGHER than the auto Vcore. The auto Vcore is floating around 1.25 to 1.34. The lowest Vcore on the list is 1.5, so that obviously wont help me.

The weird thing is, this just started happening. Like maybe 2 weeks ago?... Anyways, it is driving me nuts. After lowering the cpu bus to 150 I tried a quick game of BF 1942, and after one map I dropped out of the game and checked my temps. They were running around 72-74C!!!! Shock

So holy crap I have to not play games anymore. That is why I built the damn rig. I could have gotten a $400 Dell to surf the web for gods sake. I want my rig to work right! Do you guys think this could be a temperature gauge malfunction, or a software glitch or is it the real deal. Before tonight for the last two weeks or so it was just auto shutting down or crashing to the desktop during games.

ANY IDEAS???

What program are you using to check your temps? I had the exact same problem with MBMonitor, it would start out at 35c or so, then suddenly jump to 70c, and start freaking out on me. Trust the BIOS, if it states you're running at a coolish temp, and you load up Windows, it shouldn't move much.

Just for giggles and grins, check to make sure your HSF hasn't loosened or moved. Check the bracket, in particular. I had two brackets break on my Shuttle mobo, so one corner of the HSF was popped up a little bit. If all looks fine, it's seating right, and your BIOS reports good temps.......you should be fine. Might be a glitch in the software you're looking at.

^^^^ agreed..... and also...you should be able to pump 1.5 or higher through that chip..... mine says 1.4 MAX...and its at 1.625......

what kind of compound ar eyou using? Or do you not use compound on socket T?

Like they said ^^^

Dont use AI tuner to overclock. Do it manually. You shouldnt have to drop your 800mhz FSB down to 600mhz to get normal cooling temps...

also what kind of HS/fan do you have?

Well, I just let it run all night to see if it would be stable. It was. My idle temp was rock solid around 40-41C all night. So why would it jump so high under load? 40c to 74c... thats 34C for loading (IMO) an older less intense game. I had been playing Doom III last month, which should have produced a much harder load, and I had no problems when running that game.

oops forgot to answer some of your questions....

The HS is a Thermaltake aftermarket HS that was rated really well. I don't know the model # though.

The thermal compound I am using is the stuff that came already preapplied to the Thermaltake HS. It was white, and it gave decent coverage, but wasnt "overflowing" if you get my meaning.

I think my BIOS is screwy too. With all fans running, HS running, at first boot, after sitting for a while (and I have the case open to verify all the fans and HS are running) I am seeing BIOS temps at like 72C. There is no way that can be right, is there? How could it get that hot within seconds of being turned on, with all fans crankin away and the HS working properly???

Well i rmember Nathan saying in a few of his reviews the temp of the prescotts, That they get hot... but they are stable when hot. So I wouldnt worry too much unless it starts restarting on you.

Just to be sure...I would replace that stock thermal paste with a good brand, (Arctic Silver), and be sure to apply just enough to cover the CPU, it should be very thin.
I have experienced VERY noticable degradation of cooling performance with those generic pastes

Another thing...your temp. reading diode may have gone bad. In my computer, the CPU diode reads 66C, but the CPU socket reads 49C(it's really hot here right now )

You could maybe try to touch the heatsink CAREFULLY, don't burn yourself, to see if it feels as hot as it claims to be.

What is the difference between the CPU diode and the CPU socket? How do I gauge the difference?

And since nobody really hit on one of the other aspects of the question, I will ask again. How could the temp go from 42C on idle to 74C under load within a minute or two? I mean, if it does get really hot, shouldn't it be kind of gradual?

THX for all replies!!!

Improper contact between the CPU and Heatsink will allow the CPU temp to rise at a very fast rate. and BIOS doesn't limit CPU activity like windows does

take that heatsink OFF, Clean both the CPU and bottom of the HS with rubbing alchohol, and re-install it with a fresh application of thermal paste...even if you have to use the generic stuff. At least try to elliminate the possibility that your processor is REALLY BURNING UP, before you worry about whether a sensor is malfunctioning

My advice to you would be to follow Ham's advice. I too had a board that was incorrectly reporting temps, and you really have to eliminate the possibility that the processor is not being cooled properly before you can proceed. Even if you should find that the HSF is not in good contact with the proc. you'll need to clean off and then carefully reapply the thermal compound.

After that, I would use SpeedFan to get a better look at what's being reported.
Click the "charts" tab and check the appropriate temp box and you'll be able to see what temps are being reported. Look for wild fluctuations.
Good Luck!

Here's a screenie of SpeedFan during a short play of UT. As you can see, the temp rises quickly, and should drop even quicker if your HSF is doing it's job.
The time window is about 5 mins.

also make sure there arent any sensors blocking the flow of air or keeping your CPU fan from spining, this happened to me about a month ago, my CPU sensor that came with my case somehow it got caught in the CPU fan and the fan wasent spinning but i ddint knotice this because i was playing a game, and all of a sudden my temp monitor program that came with my comp started to beep at me and then it said my temps were at 72C i was flipping out, i opened my case and sure enough i could smell heat comming from my comp and could feel the heat and so i saw the wire removed and saw that my fan wasent spinning and turned my comp off for about 10 minutes powered it back on and everything was fine, man that scared me cause im not done buying all my new parts so i would be computerless for like a month i couldnt do that. so ya check for stuipd crap like that and make sure nothing is near or on your heatsink that shoudlnt be there.

wehen applying the arctic silver.. place a minute drop in the center of the cpu and let the h/s "squish" it out...

recommended by the president and creator of a/s

if this is a heatpipe heatsink you have to wonder as well if a heatpipe went bad. This may not a common thing but it can happen. But as these other gentlemen have said the first step is a try reseating the heatsink with new thermal paste. If this does not fix the problem then you may want to try another heatsink just to make sure.

Ok, one thing people are missing here.

You're using the original stock thermal compound.

Once that compound has dried under the heat, it won't conform properly to a new proc/HSF combination. I'll be willing to bet that's your problem, right there.

Get some denatured alcohol, clean the proc and the new HSF you have, re-apply some quality thermal paste to the clean, shiny core and HSF.

You cannot resuse thermal paste, no matter how few hours or days is on it. It hardens, slightly, and won't conform properly to the new HSF. Always use new thermal paste.
