wait...
...wait...
yeah, I hate Steam.
Here's the deal. They shove updates down your throat, and there isn't a way to undo them. That sucks hardcore when I'm running 28k, it takes me 5 hours to download an update, and then the update messing up my game.
I get the following error: Could not AllocSound() for InsertSound() (DLL), all thanks to one of the recent updates to either CS:S, or the Source engine itself. It repeats this error in the console, **everytime** a sound is played. Guess what, that kills my game now. It is still playable, but not nearly as good as it was.
Now another reason I hate Steam. Their support really blows. I tried posting in their forums, in support and in the CS:S section. Either people wouldn't responded, or responded and had no idea what they were talking about. So I decided I would just send them an error report or whatever through e-mail. Well I never got a reply past an automated response.
So, I hate Steam. _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

| pyro hate to say this but they dont give a damn about dial-up anymore, thats why steam is the way steam is cause most people have broadband but you prolly live in the country or something thats keeping you from getting it which sucks. but i got a question why can you use 56k? |

I live where nothing but overpriced satelite is the only thing offered. I could get 56k, but for the extra I would have to pay it's not really worth it. If I could get cable, which would be 1938908 times faster than my current connection, then it would be worth it.
But I'm not just talking about the setup of Steam, I'm also talking about the support. I got no reply, and the same thing happened to Polar. Maybe I'll get an answer in a couple months... _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |

| honestly, i think steam cares ALOT about dial up. im on 56k and i rarely used to play cs 1.6 because of my nearly 400 ping. (unplayable at that high). But now on cs;s i get about 150-250 ping usually. and its very playable ( i can own people with scout) and i play around the clock. yes the updates can suck. but the game is very playable over 56k |

Most of the newer online games will work fine on dialup, it's a difference in the way they're setup now. I don't know about CS, but with WoW, SWG, and EQ2, the graphics and hardcore stuff are actually stored on the server, you just cache those files once on your system. The rest of the time, all you're sending is a little bit of code to tell the server where to put you.
Also, I don't know about Steam, but in most online games, you can disable the "automatic update" thing, and do it manually, when you want. Even though I'm on 10/2mbs broadband, I tend to turn those "features" off, just to save some loading time. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

$45 a month, plus my TV. I get a break with the "family package", 80 something channels of TV I never watch. My total bill is $100 a month. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

Maybe they just have to many people to deal with, but they should have expected that since it's HL2.... _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |
