I've been hearing alot about this, primarily from HL2. Something about the movement coding makes people "seasick". Even some hardcore gamers I know (one with a prominent mag) get nauseous playing it.
Reason I'm asking, is (I'm sure you know *wink wink*) I've been playing SWG for the better part of a year, and recently they upgraded their graphics movement to the HL2 code, now there's a sudden rash of people complaining about getting sick. Personally, I haven't noticed any ill aftereffects, just very smooth and quick gameplay. I mean, an MMORPG that responds faster than my single player games? Amazing.
Anyway, I've been trying to figure this out. I'm thinking that it's only partly the coding, in a sortof unofficial poll, the majority of gamers getting sick have smaller screens. SInce I have a 19" LCD now, maybe that's it. Since I have more screen in my face, and less peripheral view of things around the screen, it doesn't bother me. Likewise, I don't have a tower or hutch on my desk, just a nice, big, flat desk with a plain white wall behind it, and very little at eyeball level around the screen.
Anyone else have this problem? _________________ Big enough to scare you |

for some reason iD Software games always make me ill after a few hours of gameplay. This has almost never happened for any other game but the old.. OLD... school Wolfenstein 3D did it, Doom 2 did it, Return to Castle Wolfenstein did it and Doom 3 does it.
I have played several other FPS's as well as numerous other games in my life time, and never (other than the rare occasion that I was already ill at the time) has any other company's games caused me to feel neausious. It must be somethin to do with their engines. _________________ "The closer you get to light, the greater your shadow becomes" - Kingdom Hearts

Oh I forgot to mention, I read the Masters of Doom biography about the iD Software team and their many changes.. I also remember that Doom 2 used to cause a ton of motion sickness in all kinds of people.
Oh, and the Quake series (for some reason or another) was exempt from this.. never made me feel nauseous. _________________ "The closer you get to light, the greater your shadow becomes" - Kingdom Hearts

The only game on planet earth that makes me feel ill after playing for a while is Half Life (the original). HL2 is fine (completely different engine, graphics, etc) but Half Life was the only game that made me feel ill playing it. That is the reason why to this day I haven't completed it. There, I said it.... _________________

Yeah, it seems to be limited to a few people, but what's odd........I get seasick/carsick easily, unless I'm driving. If I'm a passenger in either a car or a boat, count on me getting pukey. HL2 (and SWG, since it's getting the same complaints now) don't bother me at all. It appears to be people who don't get motion sickness that experience it.........
I wonder...if I called HL2 developers........how many of them got carsick, and coded the software so it wouldn't affect them. But by doing so, they affected the other extreme. Hm. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

I have never had motion sickness from anything. I like flying in light aircraft and love it when theres a bit of turbulence (passenger not pilot) I flew crosscountry on tuesday for a job, the little twin engine plane was swaying all over the place, it was sooo much fun
I am pretty sure that if I don't get sick from that then no game could do it
My GF gets sick watching me play some racers tho _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

That appears to be so. While the only game that makes me dizzy after a while is HL1 I never get motion sickness in cars, planes, boats, whatever. Throw me into any transportation and shake it about and nothing, but put me in front of HL1 for half an hour and i'm a gonner... I just don't know what it is, it's not like it's the pacing of the game. I mean I play Richard Burns Rally now THAT's one fast paced game and I'm fine with that. Could it be the colours but then there are games that use similar colours, etc. All weird....
HL1's source code is funny, makes me dizzy.... weird.... _________________

Interesting.....If I read in the car and don't look up regularly, I feel the effects of motion....I don't become a chunk blaster, but I feel a dizziness.
Sometimes, when I watch someone else play, (a good FPS) I can feel a similar "dis-orientation".
This never happens if I'm driving or playing myself. _________________ .

Right........some games will make me want to hurl watching other people play, and I know when I play a good FPS, my girlfriend wants to blow chunks, partly because of the way I play.....fast, using the mouse to look around alot while running. Even flying in SWG can make her sick, when I do barrel rolls and such, or I'm in a particularly nasty dogfight.
I don't think it's a conspiracy theory, I just think that (maybe) in an effort to cure the motion sickness in people prone to it, they went a bit too far in the other direction. I'm sure it'll get fixed, but I'd love to figure it out. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

HL1 makes me feel ill, does that make me epileptic? I THINK NOT!
