help with network

ok heres the deal we have a wireless network set up around my house and i have a printer atached 2 my lil bros computer (we have windows xp).i want to print on my computer to his but i went to his when to share printer and made a name 4 it and did when i come over 2 my computer i go to add a printer search 4 printers in the network and all that comes up is a lil thing that says windows network when i click on that and press next it says"u need to specify a valid printer name"im so confused its not even funny

im going insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I actully know abit bout this lol..? have you got a print server or just a wirless modem?

Honestly, I've never, ever gotten print sharing to work, even in a direct computer to computer connection. It seems that, even though Windows gives you the option, you still need a networkable printer, that can connect directly to the router. And believe me, I've tried everything, I don't want the printer hooked to my machine!

stay away from d-link they are a horrible company, get Linksys if your gonna get something like that.

ive gotten 3 routers from them and 2 of them had bad ports and 1 didnt even turn on, Linksys is the best you can get its a division of Cisco and everyone knows Cisco is the absolute best networking company in the world.

start --> controll pannel --> printers --> right click on the printer and click sharing tab --> enable sharing.

on the other computer
double click "my network places" --> click view entire network --> click "microsoft windows network" -->click workgroup (or whatever it gives you) --> click on computer with printer attached --> you should see the printer in this screen, right click on the printer and click connect.

If you have more problems post back here eith whatever errors you are getting and I will talk you through more.

I agree there. I have both Linksys and DLink products, both work equally well. In fact, I like the Dlink somewhat better.

homerun2555, it sounds like you need to run the "Network Setup Wizard" in Windows XP.

The "Network Setup Wizard" can be found in the control panel. If your control panel is in "Classic View' the wizard should be listed in the main list. If your control panel is in "Category View" then you will have to click on "Network and Internet Connections" to find the wizard.

You shouldn't have any problems browsing for the other computer on the network as long as you select the same Workgroup name on both computers in the Network Setup Wizard.

I assume that's what he did, but he's not directly connecting computers, and that doesn't enable print sharing. All it does is enable ICS, and limited file sharing.

Windows does include a "printer sharing" feature, but like I said, I've never been able to get it to work. Even based on MS's suggestion of which machine to put the printer on........if it's not a network enabled printer, it won't work.

Actually if I remember correctly, Linksys was bought by Cisco. That dosn't mean that Cisco actually makes them. Linksys is a good company, but I really haven't seen many problems with Dlink products. I say buy whatever you can get a good buy on.

Well, I'm watching this one.....I don't use a router, my two machines are hooked directly, my other old machine is basically a glorified router. Anyway, I can browse both computers, from either one, obviously Internet sharing is working, blah blah. The only thing that won't work is the printer, doesn't matter which machine it's hooked to. Confused

Assign an IP to the machine that the printer is connected to eg. 192.168.0.1

Then on the other machine click start --> run --> type \\192.168.0.1 press enter or click ok

To set IP

Right click on my network places and click properties
right click on connection 1 (or whatever connection is there that is enabled) click properties.
Double click on "internet protocol TCP/IP"
if there is already a number set there under IP then write it down and go to the other computer and set it to the same number exept with a different last number

EG 192.168.0.1 ----> on 1st computer
then set 192.168.0.2 on the 2nd.

If there is no IP set then enter the one I gave as an example.

Whatever the IP is, go to the other machine and click start > run > \\[the other computers IP]

It should bring up the other machine.

This is within a wireless network...I assume the DHCP server is the router...therefore there should be no need for static IP's.
Like Fitz says make sure they are on the same network. (groupname)
The printer must be shared on the puter it's connected to. (which is where you assign a printer name)
Then it's a matter of searching the network for the printer. In an all XP workgroup, it should be automatically found and loaded.

First off, "File and print sharing" must be enabled (under XP with SP2 it has to be enabled specifically for the local network, something to do with SP2's security stuff) on both machines. The printer must be correctly installed and working on which ever machine is to be used as a print server. The network wizard thing should pick up the printer [ you specify the name] and add it as a seperate share under the computer's name on the network (e.g computer called "bob", Lexmark printer: - network connections > local network > BOB > [shared drives / folders, C, CDROM etc] [printer LEXMARK], also shown as \\BOB\LEXMARK ).

To set up the printer on your own machine (the one you want to print FROM) you need to install the network printer (Control panel > "add new printer" > "network printer" > browse the network for the printer or specify location, [ \\BOB\LEXMARK ] follow the rest of the wizard and try to print a test page. If all goes well it should spit out a printed test page on the other machine (\\BOB)

The windows wizards are NOT very easy to work though for somebody who has never set up network print servers before, M$ just seem to add excess problems to an VERY simple task.

It was actually easier to set up a print server under Win 9x.

wow... ok, print sharing is increadably easy through xp. I have both my laser and inkjet shared and my parents inkjet is shared too... On the computer with the printer you want to share installed, Go to Start>Control Panel>Printers and Faxes. Right click the installed printer and select sharing. Put a check in the shared box. Click apply and ok. Go to your computer. The one you want to print from. Go Start>Control Panel>Printers and faxes. Click on the left hand side add a printer. Click next, select add a network printer and click next. Select brouse for a printer and double click the computer that has the printer attatched to it. Select the printer and click next. It may ask you for permission to install the print driver on ur machine if it does just click yes and then when its done click finish.
To test it open up word or notepad. Type a random sentence, go File>Print, select the printer from the dropdown menu and click ok. You should then be good to go.

i have print sharing enabled on my network and it was easy to do (well for me)

I first enabled the printer to be shared in its properties

Then i accessed my network and in shared documents there was the printer

I then double clicked on it and installed that printer driver on my bro's comp and that was it.....
