okay... here's the set up...
well long ago in a dark dark place ... *gateway store**...n/m

well i have this gateway case ... i posted about it awhile ago...
we actually named it too it's called the "GIGI-UHM"
previous setup:
ecs k7s5a
512 sdram
80gig 5400rpm maxtor
2100+ palomino core!!!111!
nvidia mx440 (dead) *laying in playground i think**

now it is :
msi k7n2 delta ilsr
256meg ddr 333 (lei)
(same h/d)
(same cpu)
nvidia vanta aka tnt2 16meg

but here is what me and my bro did :
cut out 120 hole in front for 120 toyo fan (this is what the post is about
cut out rear upper exhuast
and mounted 2 80mm fans in rear... where there was no real place to mount ... but we tweaked it real good

but here is the issue.. even with the 120 mm fan with absolutely to resistance placed on it .. its loud loud loud..!!!!!!!

so i wanna make a cheap fan controller for it.. i dont wanna spend more that 5 bucks.. cuz i have spent zero on it already.. just put parts together for it...

how could i make a decent fan controller for it... ? it has only 2 leads.. ground of course and a 12v lead...

oh yeah forgot to mention.. cpu temps are 105f idle and 115-117f fully loaded w/2x p95 ... which is amazing for a palomino...

but u know.. my excellent case cooling skillz too.. j/k

Try this one, I know my local Radio Shack has them in stock. You'll need to put it together, of course. Otherwise, go to CompUSA and get one of these:

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50450490&pfp=BROWSE

Both are the same cost, about $12 USD, cheap. Or, if you can wait for a few weeks, I'm swapping out my Nexus (PC Toys branded) for a flashier model, I'll give you this one, just pay the postage.

Cheapest is a 100ohm 2watt pot. [potentiometer] radio shack or similar. Not as nice as these pulse width controllers above but alot easier.

wire like this

+12 volts __,___/\/\/\/\/\/\____[FAN]___gnd

look man the easiest way is to grab any sort of dial.. hook it up in series and just mount it somewhere on your case, wont look pretty but its free..

yup, that's what he's saying, you just need the right pot, which can be hard to find. If you want this nexus, and can wait, toss me a cookie, it'll be all of a buck to ship. I just have to wait a couple of weeks for the bucks for a new one.......this one.

This is a cheap way to slow the fan speed. No control, tho.

Has nothing to do with ground. Leave the grounds alone.

guess i wasnt specific enuff.. the fan has the 2 leads.. go directly into an end molex... which closes the daisy chain

I dunno, I'd not be willing to trust a mod that is written by somebody who confuses a Molex (four pin) connector with a 3 pin fan header. Sounds iffy to me, since you're connecting the fan ground to a positive lead, that also happens to lead back to your 12v rails for your proc and such.

I wouldn't try that one, myself. You're asking for trouble........at best, voltage fluctuations from the fan pumping power back into the positive leads, at worst, a blown PSU or mobo.

Hmmm....yep the psu indeed is isolated and ~7v would be the potential....

BUT...I've said it before and I'll say it again....the 5v rail is NOT designed for fans, lights, and etc. That is what the 12v supply does.
Messing with the 5v rail will get you into trouble.

Oh this guy's even better yet....not only does he allow the inductive loads into the 5v rail, but add's switching noises on top of it.... Shock I guess it just shows how well the PSU units are designed. Anxious

Well....if you got two fans that are the same...why don't you put them in series!!!! Then you got 6V across each fan. Think

I love the new smiley's

Wrong ohmage pot, I would say. It has to be high enough of an ohm rating to allow full power, otherwise it'll just shut down when you cut back a bit.
