install it on a fresh install of windows... i did on 2 of my comps and it runs really well... but from the horror stories that i have heard of ppl running their computer for awhile; possibly having spyware/etc., it gave them instabilities...

it shouldnt cause prob's for gaming mite increase windows performance.. uhm and browssing the web will be safer too.. with the new fire wall updates.. etc..

just make sure u run a decent a-virus like avg... and run s'b s&d, and ad aware and ur $h!t whill be legit....

Definitely should. Sp2 has been out for awhile, not only it has new security feature it also fixes a lot of critical stuff in windows, you should install it.

Make sure its installed on a fresh installation of XP. If you do that, you SHOULD be doing great. There are even some stories of it improving performance and gaming!

You don't really have a choice. As of April 12, having installed SP2 will be a requirement for future updates.

If I were you, I'd first try to install SP2 onto your present install. However, if your stuff becomes squirrely, be prepared to do a fresh install. (You might get away without doing a fresh install. Installing SP2 over my present install worked OK on my laptop.)

Slipstream your XP disk with SP2....skip SP1 all together. Google it. Pretty easy to do....maybe an hour reading and all. [not counting SP2 d/l time]

or you could get your free copy of SP2 from microsoft. I got mine in 3 days. And dont have to worry about anything . And I believe any XP without SP1 wont be covered after april 12th So SP1 And SP2 Are still going to be covered, from what I got from their update site.

That's exactly what I did. Now to use it... I still have to backup all my...stuff... then get to the reformat, then the 200 gigger goes in. :)

The horror stories that are SP2 have ended for the most part, I wouldnt worry about it damaging anything or ruining performance. I will suggest that you run a good full virus scan, and a full scan with ad-aware (or equivalent) before doing it though.

more than you ever wanted to know.
Extracting the boot sectors from a windows cd is a bit different....use bart's method.

Um, I suppose better late than never......

If you have a Windows XP cd with SP1 already installed, or an OEM disk for, say, a Dell, you won't be able to slipstream SP2 into that CD. You can only slipstream a non-patched, plain-jane retail XP cd.

Anyway, even if you install your SP1 cd, then install SP2 over it, before doing ANYTHING else, then you should be fine. That's common sense, anyway. You want all the security patches and firewall installed long before you hook up to the net.
