So I will be re-installing Windows soon and I just wanted to finalise and make sure I know the best order in which to install drivers, etc.

Basically, this is the way I'm going to do it and obviously correct me if I'm wrong:

1. Format partition (Full format)
2. Install Windows XP (with SP1 slipstreamed).
3. Install Service Pack 2 (from separate CD).
4. Run Windows Update.
5. Update Intel chipset drivers.
6. Install nVidia graphics drivers (final, stable, not beta).
7. Install on-board sound drivers.
8. Install other drivers (keyb+mouse, joysticks, wheels, etc).
9. Install all other software.

Hope this is the optimal order to install thing, comments & suggestions welcome.

P.S. Thought about slipstreaming SP2 into my Windows XP (with SP1 previously slipstreamed) but decided against it. I've already got 3 SP2 CDs and don't want to make yet another coaster, i mean cd. :)

this what you should do, I think

preinstallation:
backup all files. Download all drivers onto a CD, prepare floppy for sata if you are using it.

Then
1-install xp with sp2 (slipstream if you can, make life much easier)
2-install chipset drivers and all needed drivers.
3-install antivirus software/firewall
4-windows update.

Agreed....

3.3) hook up internet (physically)
3.6) update antivirus software/firewall

and...IMO chipset drivers...onboard drivers...pci card drivers...keyb + mouse then nvidia drivers. In that order. Then add win updates and etc. then do scanners, wheels and other HW drivers that are more add-on.

Slipstreaming is worth the time to get correct, it loads nice and clean.

place number # of your original list at the end. You dont want to try to Install updates without any drivers installed.

^That way if possible. Otherwise, i'd install the chipset drivers right after you install xp. Then go for the windows updates.

Okay, thanks for your input guys. I've taken all your suggestions and have come up with a more detailed and optimised installation plan:

1. Slipstream SP2.
2. Prepare partition for formatting.
3. Format partition.
4. Install chipset drivers.
5. Install graphics drivers.
6. Install on-board drivers (including WLAN driver, but disable it).
7. Install other peripherals (keyb+mouse, joysticks, wheels, etc).
8. Install anti-virus (no firewall required, got a hardware one + SP2 will have one too).
9. Install Spybot S&D, Adaware, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta.
10. Enable WLAN card and go online.
11. Update anti-virus software.
12. Update Windows.
13. Update all anti-spyware/malware software.

The last three can be done pretty much at the same time.

I don't have to backup anything since the partition I'm re-installing the OS on does not contain any personal data. Just Windows, programs and stuff. I always have my documents on a different drive entirely (I just gotta make sure I don't accidentally format the wrong one).

Install the chipset drivers first before you install SP2, it will quicken up the overall installtion process.

Well, yea, that could be done, but it won't make much difference, all I was stating is to install the chipset drivers before you install SP2 or do any updates after the SS SP1 XP install.

really turned out to be a pretty good topic Z. We all do things a bit different I suppose.

I wouldn't disable your lan (card or onboard) just pull the cat5 till your ready.

It appears most agree that chipset drivers are the first thing to do. (besides dispense with the XP commercials and such)

I always do onboard and pci stuff before video. BUT certainly get sp2 before video. reason=sp2 contains dx9c which is nice to have existing before video drivers. ppl might disagree, but like I said, this has turned out to be a good topic.

i think the most critical thing is have firewall and AV software installed before hooking up to the net. Study has shown that an unprotected pc will get attacked like within 20min on the net.

Thanks, 2old. With all the re-installations I always thought about what IS the best order to install. Before I just did them in a random order but since I've had TN here to help, I thought it's best to ask!

Btw, 2old, I can't pull the CAT5 cable out, it's a Wireless LAN connection (hence the WLAN) thus I was thinking of disabling it. :)

So, I reckon I will settle for this:

1. Prepare partition for formatting.
2. Format partition.
3. Install Windows XP with SP1.
4. Install chipset drivers.
5. Install SP2.
6. Install graphics drivers.
7. Install on-board drivers (including WLAN driver, but disable it).
8. Install other peripherals (keyb+mouse, joysticks, wheels, etc).
9. Install anti-virus (no firewall required, got a hardware one + SP2 will have one too).
10. Install Spybot S&D, Adaware, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta.
11. Enable WLAN card and go online.
12. Update anti-virus software.
13. Update Windows.
14. Update all anti-spyware/malware software.

Wouldn't DX9c be installed along with SP2 (as 2old pointed out), that itself is installed before the vid drivers?

yep....9c is in sp2...you'll also wanna get mp10, when you update.

Yeah, pulling the cat 5 out might be a bit difficult How about the antenna? Can you undo/remove it, and lose the connection?

Tell us how it all goes.

Of course, thanks for the confirmation.

Unfortunately even removing the antenna still gives a good, albeit reduced, signal which is still fast enough for the net. One thing tho, I won't need to disable it since after the re-install all my security settings (WAP keys) will be gone therefore the router won't allow my PC to connect because the WAP key would be missing. So no need to disable anything, simply enter the WAP key when I want to go online and voila!

Will do.

Thanks for your help guys!

What domain? 2K...2K3...?

You can prolly shut off the firewall on your domain(depending on the I-net connection)

But...I'm not sure but in services...net logon must be on (manual will do) I think that sp2 defaults that as disabled.

the last drivers you will want to load are the video and sound, in that order.

I did a post about a stable computer build and in this I provided a link (Read the article) about the installing of the OS and drivers. Granted it is a little older now but it is still a valid order.

So after months and months I have finally cleaned up my PC and isntalled Windows XP SP2 fresh. I've been meaning to do this a LONG time ago.

Anyway, I used the following procedure:

1. Prepare partition for formatting.
2. Format partition.
3. Install Windows XP with SP1.
4. Install chipset drivers.
5. Install SP2.
6. Install graphics drivers.
7. Install on-board drivers (RAID drivers, WLAN driver, but disable it).
8. Install other peripherals (keyb+mouse, joysticks, wheels, etc).
9. Install anti-virus (no firewall required, got a hardware one + SP2 will have one too).
10. Install Spybot S&D, Adaware, Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta.
11. Enable WLAN card and go online.
12. Update anti-virus software.
13. Update Windows.
14. Update all anti-spyware/malware software.

I installed the RAID drivers during step 7, this was I was sure it would work (prior to installing them the 2 hard disks attached to the controller would not be recognised but I didn't need them).
And I didn't slipstream SP2, I installed straight from disk after doing chipset drivers and everything seems to be in good working order!

I think the above is the optimal method for me, it will be different for others obviously (such as the RAID drivers that will be needed to install much earlier than I did).

Until next year.....
