If you want a really good sub cheap, get the new pioneers.

Wow, I love them.

No, even their regular ones are awesome for the money.

I love my pioneer subs, they really kick hard.

OK OK I wont mention Sony again!!!! lol

Use that to remove the bad taste that mentioning Sony had left.

Anyway- the JBL will most likely be a bit higher quality speaker as Sally had mentioned. With that aside, there are a few things to consider when choosing between these. How much room do you have to work with? The Sony with its lower Vas will work well in a small sealed box (like 1 ft^3). The JBL on the other hand will lose low-frequency extension if its in a box that small- it would work better in 2 ft^3. So if you can't afford to give the JBL 2 cubes a piece, then the Sony is a better candidate.

One thing I'd like to clear up is what Sally mentioned regarding Xmax. Just because the JBL has a higher Xmax does not mean that it won't bottom out any sooner than the Sony. The Xmax is only the measurement of the coil from the top plate of the motor plus 15%.

It typically tells you how far the cone can move one-way linearly to the point that its Bl (motor force) has dropped to about 71%. Simply put, Xmax tells you what useable excursion you have before you get distortion. Typically, it can move further, but with distorion.

The other ratings of Xsus and Xmech are typically not provided with most speakers- at least retail speakers. Xsus determines how far the speaker's coil can move- which can sometimes be less than the measured Xmax- thus the Xmax is uses the Xsus rating as it is less. Xmech, as you/ve probably guessed, is the mechanical limit of cone movement- how far the coil can move before it hits the back plate or tears the spider. [/b]

The Sony has a trendy five sided cone that is likely to be purchased by those who like gimmicks. It is a less efficient speaker w/ a sensativity of only 89db but does claim a higher actual power rating.

The JBL is a more efficient speaker with a more mondane asthetic. It has a higher excursion rating and a greater Vas (Volume Air Suppression), so it is less likely to over-exert itself.

I was going to mention this as well-comparing the sensitivity ratings between brands is difficult as they are not always measured the same (1W/m or 2.73V/m, may not be measured in a 100% anechoic room, etc). And, this is merely it's small signal response. Speakers will perform differently when fed higher power. Thus it is not worth comparing.

Also, Sally got his wording a lil backwards regarding Vas. A lower Vas means a stiffer suspension and thus potentally will resist over-excursion or bottoming out. Higher compliance drivers are looser (like the JBL), but may not bottom out - again this depends on the Xsus and Xmech values.

the first a JBL Power 12 that was a very efficient speaker that I couldn't seem to kill, although it bottomed out more than it should have

I remember that. I put it through hell for a while on an old jensen amp . . . then ppi . . .then mtx. Finally upgraded the thing . . . some guy in desmoines had it last i knew.

Sally and Nate are right. Speaking between the JBL and sony, i'd have to say JBL hands down.

Is there any other speakers you have in mind?

Yer I have the Kicker 8" L5 subwoofer (the square one) in mind to replace the JBL, but for one its quite expensive for me, and two, i would need to put it in a separate enclosure which I would have trouble doing considering the size of the box in my boot already (as shown on the pics I posted on the 'Post your sound system' topic....

Any ideas??? Thanks

If you had the tools, you could build your own box. Just section it off. We could give you many tips for building your own box(es)/ elcosures.
