If it was me... Id go JBL. BUT... Rockfard Fosgate Punch 12" 1's is the best. I just put them in my car and they are a dream come true. _________________

The new punches are distorting garbage that pop and sound horrible when pushed. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Well regardless... Im the one thumpin' 'em in my ride. And they sound absolutely awesome.
Also...
I dont think you should speak unless you own a pair. And its the same with all speakers... It really depends on what box you buy to have pure performance. I didn't go to school to get an audio engineer degree for nothin. _________________

What's up with the attitude?
Just because I don't own them does not mean I haven't heard them.
I had them tested right in front of me and they started to pop pretty badly when the volume was turned up. Had three separate installers tell me to avoid them because of their lack of sound and build quality.
I could care less if you are an audio engineer, that doesn't make my experience with them any different and does not make your opinion any better than mine. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Hey hey now kids, ease up. For all intensive purposes, both of you are partially correct and both are exhibiting plenty of "attitude". Ego's aside, The RF Punch1's in question are "low end" speakers and are not engineered around extreme excursion, so it is not out of line for Nathan to have heard them "pop". Also, it is not uncommon for installers to push for the upsell and speak ill of their own product. Someone who is selling a product is not always the most reliable source of information as their motive may be compromised. Still, however, the fact remains that they are low end speakers. It is, however, very feasable to build a box tailored to a specific speaker's characteristics and recieve optimum results. For example, I have heard Radio Shack brand subs sound and perform well without bottoming out due largely to the enclosure, while many car audio shops display subwoofers in enclosures that may not be the most flattering.
Macabre, I am certain that your RF setup sounds quite nice (post a thread about it w/ pics man!). It is well with-in the same reality that Nathan has heard much the opposite result of said woofers. Neither opinion is "better" than another, rather they are just based upon completely different observations with a great many variables (kinda reminds me of a certain argument about stock P4 cooling ).
==============================
And now to the actual subject:
I beleive that I have made it quite clear how I feel about Sony car audio, and the 5-sided subs in particular. This aside, Sony does not have a high end car audio line and hasn't since they dropped the ES series. It is for this reason that so many people immediately classify Sony products as crap...and I am one of them. As I stated above, however, it would be feasable to make these speakers sound alright; but at a $109/ea MSRP ($89 street), this wouldn't be too smart an investment. The JBL that you listed is also on the low end of the spectrum of Harman International's car audio products, but is in good company. I have personally had two subwoofers from Harman: the first a JBL Power 12 that was a very efficient speaker that I couldn't seem to kill, although it bottomed out more than it should have; the second was an Infinity Kappa 12 that I did manage to decommission (apparently it couldn't handle 1100W RMS out of my amplifier....whoooops!). Harman does make a good many very decent products.
As I have no personal experience to speak of with either subwoofer, an analysis of the specs should serve to best evaluate the question without extensive here-say and ranting.
| Code: |
SONY JBL
Max Power (W): 1200 1000
Max Power (RMS, W): 350 250
Sensitivity (dB/W/m): 89 93
Freq. Resp.: (Hz) 18 - 2k 28 - 450
Impedance (Ohms): 4 4
D (mm): 250 283
Rdc (Ohms): 3.2 ?
Fs (Hz): 26.4 24.75
Qts: 0.42 0.43
Qes: 0.44 0.46
Qms: 5.86 6.46
Vas (Lit.) : 55.5 100.45
Xmax (mm) : 7.5 12

The two speakers are quite similar, so you must weigh your brand allegiances along with the benefits of each.
The Sony has a trendy five sided cone that is likely to be purchased by those who like gimmicks. It is a less efficient speaker w/ a sensativity of only 89db but does claim a higher actual power rating.
The JBL is a more efficient speaker with a more mondane asthetic. It has a higher excursion rating and a greater Vas (Volume Air Suppression), so it is less likely to over-exert itself.
Looking strictly at specs, the JBL would be my choice. Considering brand reputation and other influences, the JBL would be my choice. _________________ |¤| |

OK thanks for the info sally after scrolling down the page of unnecessary arguments- in my personal, yes personal experience and belief the Rockford Punch series are overrated and overpriced..... Nowhere near the league of Alpine.
Now according to Togglehead I shoud take the JBL GT4-12 sub out and put in two 8 inch subs to give a better bass range...... Any ideas? |

| And yes I agree Sony seem to produce equipment soley for those on a tight budget and are the 'flashy' type..... But I think their Headunits are unusually high end. |

Stick to a single 12 in a sealed box for good performance and excellent range. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Nathan...
I wasnt trying to display an attitude. I was just simply stating how I felt on the subjet. I happen to have RF P1's and when I hear them they sounded great.
After I posted how much I love my speakers you told me how much of a "distorting garbage" they are, and that they "pop and sound horrible when pushed." I still tried to be nice. But I felt like you where continuosly being agressive.
The truth is, is that Im not going to change you mind about these speakers and vice-versa. So the least we can do is be cool about what each other has to say.
Sorry If I upseted you man. I really didnt mean to.
Kyle~

| I didnt create this topic for people to argue about whether Rockford Fosgate Punch 1's are any good or not- opinions are personal beliefs regardless of having any degree, all you need to have is a taste in music, but to be honest Macabre I didnt ask or want your views on your RF P1's thanks very much- read the topic name. Yes I respect that you like your P1's, but the fact that this is, with no question about it, a low end sub due to its specifications and composition means whether you like the sound of it or not, there is no way it can be pushed into the realms of say Alpine, in terms of decibels etc. |

LOL Yer Audiobahn are ever increasing their popularity and are gettin a big reputation especially in America I've heard. If we want to discuss things like this though, we should start a new topic titled 'favourite subs' or summat coz I am after views on supposedly crappy sony- and not so bad JBL here LOL |
