the "c" is to donote a type of p4 system. You see intel has many different pentium 4's, socket 478, socket T, different FSB 400, 533, 800, diff cache, etc. So in order ot differentiate among same clockspeed but diff cache, FSB, sockets, intel just add letters to the speed. So "C" is just one of type. (if I am not mistaken, the C is the 800FSB of the northwood).

p4c is p4 northwood core, 512k cache
Celeron D is Prescott core 256k cache
P4e is P4 Toaster Oven core 1mb cache
p4 EE is the P4 extreme edition based on a northwood core but with l3 cache
p4a if i'm not mistaken is a p4 prescott with 533 frontside bus

yep, when the 90nm core prescotts came out, they started calling some of the 533 fsb pressies "a" chips, where many of us called the older 256cache chips "a" to differentiate them from the later chips that we called "b's"
confused....join the club

it's not crappy, it still got most of work done. Of course, it's not the best performer, but it all depend how much you need the cpu for:). Don't forget, when you buy the cpu, make sure you mobo can support the newer cpu (ie the 800 if you decide to get the 800, prescott, etc). Check the mobo first.

I had another question about CPUs.. Im shopping around for a 775 for the ASUS P5ND2-SLI board I bought. Ok I noticed two CPUs were
P4s 3.8 GHz 800FSB and 1MB Cache...Only difference was after P4 one has 570 and the other has 571. Whats the difference??? Think They are both bare CPUs with nothing else. They read as so...
P4 570 3.8 GHz 1MB cache 800FSB H/T
P4 571 3.8 GHz 1MB cache 800FSB H/T
I wanted to know so I can get a good fast powerful CPU and not be fooled by GHz when really a CPU with less GHz was better. example.. P4 3.0GHz 2MB 800FSB is better than a P4 3.4GHz 1MB 800FSB.
BTW.....These CPUs were not any of my choies... I just happened to see this and wanted to know.

Ok, quick rundown.

Using the ones you picked:

The p4 570 is a 3.8ghz, 800mhz FSB, 1mb L2 cache 32 bit proc.

The P4 571 is a 3.8ghz, 800mhz FSB, 1mb L2 cache 64 bit proc.

In general, bigger cache equals faster proc, but not necessarily better. Your 3.0ghz 2mb might be slightly faster than the 3.4ghz 1mb, but only at certain things.

That also depends on the architecture. We all know a 3.0ghz Northwood (C, if you're keeping count) is a better performer than a 3.0ghz Prescott (E), because the Northwood runs cooler...........so it'll OC better, and run smoother.

Confused yet?

I thought the 600 series was the 64-bit chips. And my P4 never goes above 47 with Air cooling and no AC. I just wish they put out a 64 bit 478... ALAS if I waited another week I could have had a 775 system. Mad

Is it posible to run a 64 bit cpu on a 32bit OS, and is there a performance gain.

The 600 series is also 64-bit.....

P4 570 = 3.8ghz 800mhz FSB 1mb L2 32 bit
P4 571 = 3.8ghz 800mhz FSB 1mb L2 64 bit
P4 670 = 3.8ghz 800mhz FSB 2mb L2 64 bit

First off Noxide PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE save yourself some trouble and either return the P5ND2 or blow it up. To date there are way too many issues with the C19 chipset no matter the manufacturer. Abit, Asus, MSI, Gigabyte all have problems with their NF4 IE boards. If you want SLI for intel wait for the i975X chipset coming in Jan 06. The NF4 IE are very unstable. Won't run memory at its rated speed or timings. Has random shut down issues. This is a chipset to bypass and not touch with a 10' pole.

FnF, to be correct the pressie have a much greater OC potential than the northwoods ever did. Otherwise it wouldnt be common to reach 4.2 and even as high as 5 ghz. And in cases of extreme cooling 7.2 ghz.. So the original belief that the prescott core is not a good overclocker is false. Even on the dualcore that I have I can get a 500mhz OC at stock voltage.

^^^right

The only thing that limted them was cooling....IMO the Northy was a more PRACTICAL overclocker.....as it didnt require as much cooling.....but the pressie would yield higher results for the next level Tweaker....
