THQ Inc. and Relic Entertainment today announced that Winter Assault, an expansion pack Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is under development and is scheduled to release in fall 2005. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault will include a brand new, fifth race, The Imperial Guard.

CALABASAS HILLS, Calif., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- THQ Inc. (Nasdaq: THQI - News) and Relic Entertainment today announced the expansion pack to their critically acclaimed real-time strategy hit Warhammer(R) 40,000: Dawn of War(TM). Featuring a deeper single player experience and even more intense Dawn of War action, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault will also include a brand new, fifth race -- The Imperial Guard. Based on the world of Warhammer 40,000 -- the dark, futuristic, fantasy universe from Games Workshop, the game is scheduled to release in fall 2005. "The response to Dawn of War has been overwhelming," said Ron Moravek, general manager, Relic Entertainment. "Combining the enthusiasm we're seeing from the fans with the ability to draw from the seemingly endless, rich content from the Warhammer 40,000 universe made the decision to create an expansion easy. We look forward to building on the Dawn of War franchise with even more visceral combat action throughout both the single and multi-player experiences."

Awwwwww sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet... they have the Baneblade tank =D
Wait a sec...
All-new race???
::raises eyebrow::
The Imp. Guard? They were in the first DoW, just not a selectable race. They were in damn near every mission, though. I used them the way imp guard is generally used... cannon fodder. The Leman Russ tanks were kinda handy, in a pinch, though. The grunts just suck up lead and die. Get some power armor on those poor footsloggers.

Now, if they were going to make a new race, why not something more fun than Imp. Guard, you know, like, Dark Eldar, or Tyranids... or *gasp* Tau? I mean, the Baneblade is a great "super" vehicle, I suppose... but wouldn't a Carnifex shredding a tank with it's claws or Tau Battle Suits zipping around all nimbly-bimbly be more entertaining than -another- giant tank grinding it's way across the battlefield at a whopping 5mph?

DoW... great RTS, especially for fans of the 40k tabletop game. The squad-based combat system is a bit innovative compared to other RTS's I've played, with the different "stances" designating the squad's preferred method of attack/responding to attack (assigned to the F-keys... YES!... plant and unload into the enemy, now... CHARGE!), the reinforcement/upgrade methods, and the integration of squad morale.... all great features. That, and...there's no resource gathering... no peons running around chopping down trees, or mining exotic minerals, or knitting little sweaters, or whatever it is the hell that your peons do. You have to take and hold territory, in order to establish a link with HQ (and subsequently, get bigger, better reinforcements). Brilliant.

Slight thread hijack...(and I may be exposing myself here as an even -bigger- dork)(as well as being ignorant of a possible earlier thread regarding this)

...does anyone else play the tabletop game? What army?

yeah DoW is a really great game and im very excited about the expantion. I find that DoW is so appealing because it doesnt loose its fun value. With other RTS games, after seeing one unit killl another a few times it gets kinda boring, but just watching the kill animations and intense combat on DoW never gets dull!

I can understand many gamers confusion/annoyment over the new race being imperial guard, after talk of tyranids and tau. personally i was really looking forwards to playing as tyranids, but im just as happy with the imperial guard

I dont 'collect' anymore but i still have, and intend to finish painting, an Imperial Guard tank army and a Chaos Khorne Fantasy army
