Can i add this stuff to my watercooling setup? Or do you guys think it will damage my pump? It's the orange stuff from prestone...if you go to the website, on their main page, www.prestone.com it is the silver bottle with the orange liquid on the left hand side of all the products.

Just wondering because i want to change for something other than green for a change. Thanks. Also, for more info on the product, if you click on "products", then on "Anti-freeze/Coolant" and then 1 last click on "Prestone® Extended Life 5/150 Antifreeze/Coolant" that will give product info.

do you think this would damage my components if a dilute amount is used in my distilled water? (like 1oz. in 1 liter or so)

actually any of the coolants/antifreezes should be fine. I use the standard green coolant in my systems.

dexcool should be fine. Or you can always use a little Redline water wetter. The only downside to using water wetter is the smell of the stuff after it has been in use. That is unless you like the smell of cat piss.

Liking the smell of cat piss = no.

How often do you flush and refill your systems?

that reminds me ..

In case of any leakage.. (and what are the chances of that in a system) .. won't these added stuff will burn / blow / short circuit / mal function the stuff ??

I was advised to use distilled water since.. it doesn't conduct electricity

-Thanks

really dont have to do a flush and fill. At the most just keep it topped off.

even if you are just running plain distilled water and the cooling system sprung a leak you would end up frying you computer. So the benefit of running the additives out weight the negatives. Because the additives will inhibit algae growth, lubricate the pump and protect against corrosion.

for all intents and purposes you want to use about a 15-20% solution in distilled water.

Generaly I think a 50/50 mix of distaill water and antfreeze is good.

A 50/50 mix is ONLY needed if your water is chilled well below room temperature, like below -5 degrees C!, propylene glycol (the main ingredient in antifreeze) has a MUCH lower thermal capacity than water (hence the need for water in car cooling systems in the first place), the more Glycol in the mix, the less heat a specific volume of water can transfer. You only need enough AF in themixture to ensure that the water remains clean and to reduce the corrosive effects of the water on any metal parts in the cooling system.

I use water cooling in a number of different setups, one of which is a chilled water setup, this runs at a lowest temp of -40 degrees, in this type of setup the reduced thermal ability of the high glycol / water mix is offset by the lower temperature of the coolant. My room temp water coolers / water cooled peltier block setups only use ~20% glycol mix. I've experimented with higher levels, the 15 - 25% mix is the best range depending on the specific type of cooling. Higher glycol mixes at room temp cause increased heating / poor performance in standard cooler setups.

7 years of experience in water cooling has gained me some good knowledge of coolants.

What do you use the "chilled" water setup for and how is it chilled?

I've been researching water cooling quite a lot lately as I'm thinking seriously about taking the plunge myself. None of the articles I've come across advocate the use of more that a 20% mix of any additive in the cooling water.
I would heed the advice of Weaz and SS on this.

I'll write up a little something on the chiller system tonight. There is actually two prototypes I made. Done on the cheap (just parts I found in dumpsters), so it's not too costly to make a good super cooled system.
