do not get socket 940, it does not support dual channel and for some processors you have to use ECC RAM I think its only for the FX-51 and 53 but not sure, IMO get the 3200+ winchester socket 939 its what me and ozzy are getting, and I think you should fall onto our bandwagon

So what happend to amd with the 940 processors? I mean dang not even supporting dual channel

i think the socket 940 are reserved for the fx chips, which are highly overpriced , just stick with the socket 939 and then the highest 939 processor you can afford

940 a thing of the past? I don't think you're quite right there considering AMD will be releasing dual-core processors later this year based on the current Opteron processors, which is a socket 940 processors, therefore their new dual-core processors will be 940 too.

What about the 754 socket, thing of the past? or is 939 the best way over all.

I'm not sure on the socket 754 (i'm not really an AMD guy, maybe they can help me out) but IMO socket 939 would be best overall and I'd advise you go in that general direction unless you want to wait for dual core.
You see with socket 940, which is going to be the new dual core socket layout, if you have a socket 940 board now then in the future you can simply remove your old single core chip, insert your brand new dual core chip and off you go. Maybe a BIOS update is all that required.
Do note that the AMD dual core chips are going to be based on the Opteron core (socket 940) therefore they're generally aimed at server setups.
Intel, however, is going to be aiming for dual core based off the current Prescotts and will therefore be attacking the desktop market. Finally, VIA will be going dual core too and will be making processors for budget setups, apparently.
