Alright, here's the problem.
My girlfriend has an HP a610e (athlon 2800+, HP 8xDVD+/-R/RW, 512mb PC3200, onboard sound, etc.). The problem is that during DVD playback, the sound is distorted.
I have been through the obvious and here is what I know:
-----------------------------
Yes, it only involves DVD playback. All other sound is normal. Her sound is outputed to her Panasonic minisystem and both CD and digital format audio sound perfect. Any kind of burnt retail DVD that I have tried has been effected by this issue. Also, any playback software used still brought the same results (POWER DVD, MSI DVD, NERO). I have updated the DVD drive's firmware, updated the sound card driver, uninstalled and reinstalled both, reset the bios, and scratched my head.
Any other ideas or suggestions on this would be magnificant. _________________ |¤| |

could be that the output volume is set to high and is distorting in the minisystem... try with just headphones _________________ If time is of the essence,

You said burnt retail DVD....I'm assuming that means copied DVD's. Does it do the same thing with store-bought DVD's? If not, check your sound settings on your copying/compression software. It sounds like whatever you used to copy the DVD jacked the sound level up, especially since you say regular CD's and such sound fine. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

MEOBIUS
I have tried headphones and the problem is still evident.
JOSH
There isn't an audio cable from the drive to the onboard audio pins...but this shouldn't be required, no? Bare in mind that nothing has been altered on this system from its retail condition.
FUSSNFEATHERS
My appologies, I mis-typed...it was supposed to read "retail OR burnt DVDs I have tried a great number of DVDs and all suffer from this.
===================================
So really, I don't know where the problem lies....with the sound card or on the DVD ROM end of it. Reguardless, she thinks I am dumb for not fixing it yet and I am begining to believe her

Wierd. Ok, do you have the old fashioned cable hooking the DVD drive to the soundcard/mobo? If so, remove it, and under the drive properties, enable digital audio. Check to see if the software is defaulting to a different volume control.......should be set to the wav volume. Sometimes it'll default to another setting, which could be up too high.
It could also be a bad drive, that's corrupting the audio data from DVD's. CD's and DVD's treat audio tracks differently, and if the drive is going out to lunch, the audio will be distorted. Try another drive in the same machine, and see if it does the same thing. _________________ Big enough to scare you |

yes, I am getting sound from the motherboard. That wasn't in question. The issue is that it doesn't sound as it should. Anyway, I was considering tossing an analog audio cable in for kicks....see if that changes anything. Also, I intend to test another drive in there. _________________ |¤| |
