Hey I got my new psu today!

all neatly placed in box

all done!!! my 12v now reads 12.01 my 3.3 is 3.31 and my v core is 1.52!

Looking good...how are the voltages...i need a new PSU and that would be one of my considerations.

they are so close it scary, it is so much tighter than my old antec 350watt. Its just crazy!!!! Its also so quitet!!!

I have recently bought a Tagan PSU TG480-801. Everyone keeps saying to connect the black 4 pin to my board as well as the 20-pin, but the colours of the wires on the 4-pin are different on that ones of the 4 pin on my old PSU...?

What colour are the wires you have (and anyone else) for the 4 pin on their PSU? My old PSU had two black and two yellow wires for the 4-pin, but the new PSUs black connector has different colours on the 4pin.

I am using a VIA motherboard from Time PCs (uk) , Athlon 1600mhz.
I think it is an ATX system.

PS- Ive tried the blue "P4" labelled 4-pin connector as it had the same colour setup as the 4 pin on my old PSU, but the machine froze up each time, so didnt fancy trying the black 4-pin or the other "P4+" blue 4-pin adapter.

Heres the PSU box, the three 4-pins at the bottom (two blue, one black next to the 20 pin)

yeah people have said that I should definately be using the blue cabled "P4" as the black 4-pin with the different coloured wiring is definately for new motherboards, so that was what I tried out first, since my system only has a 20pin and 4pin slot, and is ATX like most motherboards.

I definately use the 4 pin blue "P4" and not the 8-pin "P4+". It usually crashes after a few minutes after starting windows, and has once or twice in the Bios as well. The PSU is definately connected properly, the black cabled 20 pin and the blue "P4" 4-pin is inserted well.

Could there be anything in the Bios that I need to change in order to use the PSU properly? Maybe the system is operating under the old PSUs settings...? although I think they are both 12V, just different max wattages.

My board is an ATX, and is around 2 yrs old. Even though the PSU is supposedly backwards compatible, could it be possible that my Via motherboard cannot take PSUs that are this powerful (up to 480W)? Im trying to find a reason as to why its crashing all the time. Ive got the old PSU (140W I think) in right now and the system is fine...

one of two things is going on, the psu is not being connected properly. Or the new psu is junk. If the old one is running the computer fine then those are your options.

It must be junk, my board only accepts the two connections, 20 pin and 4pin.
I assume the "E" labelled black 4-pin and the "P4+" blue 4-pin are really only ever to be used as extensions for the 24-8 pin setup on other computers.

I tried the only options I really have, the 20 pin and "P4" 4-pin but it still crashes. I suppose I could try the extension "P4+" on its own with the 20-pin, perhaps the 4-pin "P4" connection is faulty... but I think I'll take it back instead since it was crackling a bit when I did put the power lead for it in the first time- just to be safe! - thanks for the help

Well so far so good....

I've had this Tagan running for 5 days now, one restart per day. I've also tested the rails with my mulitimeter on first install and 5 days later, same rating. All and all for the money its a great buy, i am very impressed with the noise levels of this thing. (My antec was very loud!)

It seems like there has been quite a heated debate going on with this thing as well, as a personal user, and non-believer in cheap psu's, I give this my own "Hoedizzy's approval".......for what it's worth

I contacted Tagan, they tell me that the blue "P4" and "P4+" coloured cables from the PSU which have 2 black and 2 yellow connections are definately the ones I need to use, along with the 20-pin connection. It doesnt matter which blue 4-pin cable I use, supposedly. The other black 4-pin cable with different coloured connections on my PSU is only for use with motherboards that have a 24 pin setup.

Well, Ive now sent the PSU back as it seems pretty obvious that the thing was faulty, as I had connected it to the PC properly when trying it out it crashed each time. Now I just have to wait until the new one arrives... before complaining again

I have bought a new graphics card at the same time as the new Tagan PSU, and although I cant test the card with my old PSU (its only 130 W, graphics card needs 350W to work) Im certain its working ok, since the PC with the graphics and Tagan PSU used to crash in the BIOS as well.
