Hi,
I have got a Maxtor one touch external hard disk. I don't want to backup my entire system. But I plan to do a selective backup. I want to back only certain files I wish. I want to create a new folder and put all the links (shortcut or complete path) of the files I wish to backup into it and backup only once a month or so. But I don't want to backup by having a copy of the files I wish to backup in a folder, as that would consume too much of space. I referred to the online guides provided by maxtor but I didn't find how to do this. Can someone please help? |

If you only backup shortcuts...you will still lose the data if your one HDD goes, as all a shortcut is is a small file conatining information on the file target...nothing else.
You need to backup all of the data...not shortcuts, basically, copy and paste it.
If capacity is an isue...winrar your files. _________________ »4 RS«»1Ж «»1 DENE«»1 FREAKIN LAME OH«»1 MONEY MONEY«

Can't I have all the files' locations to be stored in a folder and backup the files pointed by these locations by some method? I have heard that it can be done writing a batch file or something like that.
Thanks |

Um......no.......
You need to backup the data. NOT the shortcuts. Look at it this way......if you back up your desktop icons and start menu shortcuts, then reformat your drive, you can put those shortcuts back, sure.......but they'll point to nothing. The programs are gone.
Back up your whole drive, that's what a backup is.......all the data you don't want to lose. _________________ Big enough to scare you |
