Ok finally got my system running at 2.4 and 166. Now however i get random shutdowns. I have narrowed it down to when I am playing for awhile in unreal 2002 tournament. So I am thinking it is heat.
I have an antect case with 2 80mm fans in the back ad a 350 psu with 3 fans. I am using the basic heatsink and fan that comes with the p4.
here are the usual temps:
normal reboot into bios:
system: 34+-
cpu : 42-44
(THERE IS ANOTHER ONE BUT CANT REMMEBER AND IT ALWAYS STAYS AT AROUNS 34)
after a shutdown:
system: 44+-
cpu : 44-46
(other is around 36)

PS I touched the back of my GPU and that was smoking hot also.

So here is what I am thinking...
2 more 80 mm fans for the front. 2 round ide cables to allow for better airflow.
better cpu cooler and thermal compound
better GPU fan and ramsinks

So any ideas help or the other would be most appreciated.

PS. Is there a program i can run to keep track of my temps and fan speeds while in windows? (ie so i dont have to reboot into BIOS to see it?)

Thanks

Would appreciate it if you find anything! Gonna play with the mobo cd tonight. Also buying 1 more 80mm fan for the case and gonna oder a new cpu fan and heatsink soon.

Also gonna try to clear the path a bit better than what it is at now.

thanks again!!

Cool thx for finding that!! I will d/l it tonight and try and get it setup.

Here is another twist.

cleaned off the stocke heatsink and cpu. Added some generic thermal paste. LOL now im running at a constat 50-54 instead of the 44=_ i was running before. ARGGG this is making me crazy.

At first i put to much paste on and was running 70+. then i wiped it off and put a very thin layer on and now im back down to 50-54.

Is there anything out there that has screen shots of someone pasting their cpu and heatsink? If not should i just put past on the cpu and not the heatsink? And should the layer be like micro thin?

First time for everything and I am behind the 8 ball.

Thanks for all your help!

Ok, well thermal paste wise, you should put a very thin layer of decent thermal paste on the cpu. Not see-through, but just a couple notches above it.

Now another thing, clean the cpu and the heatsink thoroughly with rubbing alcohol to get rid of the extra goop and allow for fresh material to go to work. Now when you put the heatsink on initially after the paste application, push down gently on the heatsink and twist it back and forth a bit to push any air bubbles out and allow the sink to squash out any excess.

Now seeing that your temps rose so much, what thermalpaste are you using?

Ok, moving on to your shutdown problems, you said you have some 80mm exhaust fans and the cpu fan right? Well indeed, we have found your problem!! In order to cool properly, you need a constant flow of cool air being pushed into the computer via the front case fans you SHOULD have installed. Exhausting hot air just does not hack it cooling wise. Install as many fans as you have room for (front intakes) and you will see a drastic drop in system temperature. Seeing the increase in your system temperatures, you indeed have a ventilation problem and it wasn't the CPU fan causing the problem. In addition, this will in turn also cool your videocard down.

Ok, I am officially winded, hope this helps
