Hey all...
Still messing around with overclocking, but at the moment running my P4 2.4 stable at 3.2 Ghz.
I switched the stovck Intel cooler with a Swiftech MCX4000-B heatsink with a 92mm Pabst 23 dba (1950 RPM) fan on top and applied a thin layer of Artic Cheramic on the CPU.
My case is a Chieftech big tower and I am using an Enermax 431W PSU with a 92mm intake and a 80mm exhaust fan built in. I know they dont move alot of air, so I have 6 aditional fans.
One 92mm Pabst 23 dba exhaust above the PSU, three 80mm Pabst 12 dba intake in the front - one of them cooling two hdd, one cooling one hdd and the bottom one just sucking in air.
Have another two 80mm Pabst 12 dba as exhaust in the rear of the case.
The only card I have is my Radeon 9700 with stock cooler.
So...beeing overclocked at 3.2 my temps are:
Room temp....around 25 C
Idle:
CPU=35-37 C
System=26-28 C
PWM=30-32 C
Full load (after a couple of hours):
CPU=56 C
System=29 C
PWM=43 C
So....I think my CPU temps are a little to high - agree or not?
If yes, what should I do about it?
Was thinking of getting a 92mm fan with higher RPM, but don't want it too noicy.
And since it is "only" the CPU temp I am unhappy about, I don't think cutting a hole in the side-door of my nice Chiftech and setting a intake fan to blow at the Mobo will improve my CPU temp.
What are your thoughts and ideas?
TIA
PS
I read at some other board about a guy who had also clocked his P4 2.4 aprox the same as I have, but who was getting idle temps around 27 C with the same heatsink and a standard 80mm fan..... so has made me wonder.. _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge

Ok..what are your thoughts on fan ducts then?
I mean..we know that there is a "dead" spot beneath the center of the fan, where no air is blown...so wouldn't it also help to put a fan duct on the heatsink, so that the fan will have a better "blow" on it..beeing elevated an inch or two off the surface of the heatsink? (just not sure that there are any 92mm fanducts out there...or even a 92mm->80mm converter.. _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge

No, I wouldn't do that.
One thing that is recommended is to not place you fan right on top of the heatsink, but slide it sideways so that one side of the fan has the blades blowing right down on the center of the heatsink. _________________ Owner & Administrator

slide it sideways?..not sure i follow you... how can I mount it tight then? _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge

The idle temps seem fine, but the load temps are way too high. My load temps are only like 4F above my idle temps. My idle is about 118F (47C) and load is about 122F (50C). I'm going to do a duct for mine, pulling air from a 3.5" bay right to the heatsink. _________________ TestOC PC

Cooljoe: so you think it is the fan too? I need more RPM?
Or could it be the thermal compund apllication? ...nah, then idle temps would suck ass too, right? _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge

No, you are fine.
Just see if you can attach the fan so the fan blades on one side is blowing directly on the part of the heatsink that is directly above the cpu core.
Cooljoe,
Since I have been overclocking with the 2.4c, I have yet to see load temps 4 degrees above idle. It might be a little unrealistic to have people thinking that anything above that too hot.
If your load temps are in the range of 50-55 degrees, you are doing a good job at cooling.
It's when you are in the 60's do you start to get worried. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Nathan,
True, but did you notice he said Idle is ~37C and Load is ~56C? Thats a 19C difference. Thats 98F to 133F. If I saw that much change, I'd be wondering why. To each his own I guess. I'm not sure that moving the fan will make things better. Its worth a try, but personally I don't like the idea of just moving the deadspot. The best way would be to eliminate the deadspot (which is what those Aero coolers do).
It IS true that you want air moving over the center of the heatsink, but moving the fan will only push the dead spot to another area of the heatsink. I suggest either raising the fan off of the heatsink with a duct going down to it or maybe getting one of the TMD fans since they have a smaller center on the fan. I'm not sure on the TMDs though as I think they only give a small change in temps (like a few C if that). _________________ TestOC PC

It really doesn't matter if the dead spot is moved to a different part of the heatsink, what does matter is that the dead spot is moved away from what we are trying to cool and that is the actual area directly above the core on the heatsink.
With a temperature difference as you mentioned, one thing that would definite help would be a faster fan to further increase the dissapation efficiency of the heatsink. With a case temperature of 29, I think he really doesn't need any further case ventilation, just a more power full fan on the cpu. _________________ Owner & Administrator

It wouldn't hurt to remove more of the heat from the case. A better fan for the CPU would probably be a good idea as well. I still think raising the fan off of the heatsinks and using a 1" duct down to the heatsink would help. _________________ TestOC PC

a 1" duct?
Like this one?
http://www.thermaltake.com/heatsink/ductingMod.htm
Thing is..it is for a 80mm fan...would be nice to be able to use my 92mm for this..
added:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And couldn't it make sense to place it so that the opening (and the attached fan) points to the rear of the case..and then somehow attach a "pipe" leading to one of me rear case fans that would be changed from exhuast to intake. That way it would supply cooler air directly to the CPU fan...instead of the CPU fan using the air inside the case? _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge

Raising the fan off the heatsink will decrease the cooling ability of the fan because you will be lower the air pressure. When you lower air pressure, you will lose the fans ability to drive the air down onto the heatsink.
Pertaining to his case temperature, having an room temperature of 25 degrees and a case temperature of 26-28 at idle is really good. This means that he is doing a good job at cooling.
The relative change in temperature is not going to be helped by a duct, but only with a more powerful fan. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Nathan, I hear you...but then why would Thermaltake even make that heatsink ducting mod..if not to improve the fans air effect?
Do I see a review of this heatsink duct coming up here at tweaknews? *wink* *wink*
Hmmm..been looking a bit... hard to find a 92mm fan with high RPM..atleast in my country...maybe it's because 92mm fans are usualy made as case fans and not CPU fans?

Don't worry, although thermaltake does make some good products, they make there share of crap too and the duct is one of them.
The 92mm's are a case fan like all of them, nothing special. _________________ Owner & Administrator

What I ment was, that it might be hard to find a 92mm fan with high RPM...as bigger fans usually have less RPM but move more air because of their size.
But maybe in terms of cooling CPU's/heatsinks it is better with a smaller fan with higher PRM than a large fan with less RPM?
Allthough bigger fans generallyu move more air, they might not be suited for cooling CPU's/heatsinks...since these require more speed ("faster" cooling)? or am I out on a limb here? :) _________________ Opteron170 @ 2.8 Ghz - NexXxoS XP AMD64, NexXxoS NVXP-3, NexXxoS NB-SLI1 Northbridge
