I was thinking of OCing my CPU. Right now it idles at 40C w/ stock cooling 45 under very heavy load. I have only stock cpu cooling, but my rig has a bunch of fans.

4 in front blowing in, mediumly hampered
2 on back out +2 in PS not hampered
1 on side, slightly hampered
Vantec Spectrum for vid card

I cut out the part of the metal that has the holes drilled into it, so I can have better circulation. Anyhow, I was looking for a good, inexpensive (<30) heatsink/fan combo. My Cpu is a Intel 2.8GHz P4 c.

I got that exact same CPU and I'd suggest the Zalman CNPS7000-Cu (all copper version) for it. I have it, it's overclocked and the Zalman cools it nicely.
Zalman isn't that expensive too!

Zalman's also tend to run fairly quiet......and when used in succession with "zhensem" and another Z word, you have the makings of the ever elucive literary device known as alliteration!

Zalaman is quiet, but not extreme air cooling. It should do the trick for you, but if you want to sqeeze all you can out of it, you might want to look into a little heavier-duty heatsink (i.e.-thermalright)

The Zalman looks like a good one. I does look big, and am wondering if my PSU will get in the way. On newegg, they liked it a lot. I think 3.4GHz as zhensem has would be plenty of OC for mine. I am not sure if I will get it, bc my dad thinks overclocking is very dumb bc you can screw up your stuff. But yeah, that certainly looks like a good choice. Anyhow, anybody know the operating temps, within reason for a 2.8GHz P4. I believe they are something like 85C.

a) Dads are not always stupid....OC'n is a risk that you undertake willingly, knowing you may screw up your stuff.

b) NFW... 85C is like explosion to a P4...operating temps should be <55C normally, and like 65C as an absolute max.

Agreed^ 85 is WAY to high. You should be aiming for 35-45 idle and 45-55 load.

Lowest I ever got my OC'ed proc was 25C proc and 22C case when idle (have screenshot to prove it).
Never could re-create that, oh well.

Normally I have it at about 31C cpu and 33C case on idle and 41C cpu and 38C case when fully loaded.

Right now I have it 41C on idle for cpu and 37C for case on idle but that's only because I just got home from uni and always take the Zalman off when transporting the case around long distances like travelling from uni to home (since it's very heavy and is actually heavier than the maximum weight Intel advises you putting on the socket) and I have to re-apply the thermal paste. This time, I've run out of thermal paste so I'm running without any thermal paste AND I've finally added the second PSU to my rig and I've doubled the mess of wires that was already in there.
However, the hard disks are running cooler now.

1 word

cool

anyhow, it sounds like a good heatsink, I'm going to be afk for a week or so (Grandma's House). But yeah, that looks like an awesome heatsink.
