I recently received an email with this in the subject line....
(the X's are mine)
New password activation Hello Gonzo_tc You are receiving this email because you have (or someone pretending to be you has) requested a new password be sent for your account on TweakNews.net. If you did not request this email then please ignore it, if you keep receiving it please contact the board administrator. To use the new password you need to activate it. To do this click the link provided below. http://www.tweaknews.net/forum/profile.php?mode=activate&act_key=xxxxxx If sucessful you will be able to login using the following password: Password: xxxxxxxx You can of course change this password yourself via the profile page. If you have any difficulties please contact the board administrator. -- Enjoy your stay !
There was also some Javascript stuff in it that I wasn't to sure of. I really do not remember doing this(asking for password change) and I couldn't get in using what I thought was my password, so I copied the link, used it, and then immediately went to my profile and changed the password to something totally new for me. Not sure if anyone else has gotten mail like that but I figured I better at least mention this to you. |

"or someone pretending to be you" does not sound like a email from this server.
I recently just changed my password and I didn't get a notification like that. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Hrm. I'd really like to be able to edit my posts too... Are these intentional settings? Did you set some time limit for permissions on a user level basis? So far the above has happened only erratically, I haven't noticed much of a general trend, but maybe it's just me... |

Where are you getting this from?
What forum can you not post in?
Also, edit has been removed due to a past member throwing a hissy fit and going through and editing and deleting all their posts on Tweaknews.
This resulted in the ruining of several threads. _________________ Owner & Administrator

How about a button that lets you add to your post but not remove the origional post? I suppose that would be hard to do tho. Just a thought _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

what's really priceless is having the state police and the FBI talking to each other and they apprehend someone that orchestrates a DDOS on your site.
all of it is just typical criminally mentally ill behavior. _________________ MrClarke... |

Not strictly true, I've known some really good hackers, most of the time they enter a system and leave, often you would not even know, other times your only clue would be an e-mail or message left on a site or machine addressed to the system admin explaining the security hole and the method used to gain access and often a method to secure against further attacks.
It's all about the challenge for these people. I respect that, that is the true hacker mentality - exploring computers, software, even the world around them and meeting a challange head on. All in the quest to see "what if....."
The people who claim to be "hackers" who carry out an attacks such as the one on TweakNews, often are not true hackers, they are just wanabe's who find a tool available on the internet that alows them to exploit an all ready known about vulnerability. They do this to proove somthing to others, to gain fame or a name for themselves. A true hacker does not do this sort of damage to websites and public machines, that it for the lamers to do.
An active hacker, a true hacker, will never publically announce that he has committed an attack against a machine for which he was not authorised to do so. Rule number one, keep it to yourself!
The lamers who use known exploits often have no idea WHY it works or what it is they are doing, they just run a program or script. They do not find this information out for themselves, they feed off the leftover information from real hackers. These are the types that are the criminally minded, they often cause damage to a system just because they can, or to make a point that THEY were there. These are the types of people who give hackers a bad name.
