To get a mirror finish, you need to sand-prime-wet sand-prime-wet sand-paint-wet sand-paint-wet sand-paint-wet sand-paint-wet sand.....

you need VERY fine grit automotive sand paper, and the paint must cure for at least 24 hrs before sanding.

there are some nice guides out there

Yup, Hammy's right. I'm not sure about what type of paint would be the best, but you might need to sand the top of the casing first - depending on the desired finish/texture. If you want the mirror finish, you'll have to sand in successive steps from 320ish grit to 2000+.

I painted my old 386 laptop, used ordinary spray paint and cut a template out of paper, now it has a loverly metalic gold cannabis leaf on the case lid.

Just take your time and clean the case up before you spray and you can get some good results.
Thake the time to think through what design you would like on your laptop, remember it will NOT be easy to remove an accident or change it if you don't like the design.

I used to do this kind of thing all the time with my last job. Get some good spray paints from Home Depot and get some kind of clear finish thats a spray. Cut paper templats out (a few layers of newspaper is best for this) and get painters tape to tape over what you dont want to paint. Its easy man.
