I'm trying to O/C an HP 9995 2 Ghz. It has an Asus P4B-LA mobo which has 845 chipset and PC133 sdram. I just bought a Geforce Fx5600 Ultra and hoped to be able to ramp res and turn up eye candy on stuff like BF1942, etc. It worked but not as much as I had hoped so I'm looking at overclocking.
I did my homework reading various faq's and have CPUCool/CPUFSB and other benchmark 3dmark03/sisoft. HP bios doesn't allow direct mod. CPUCool wanted my PLL so I opened case and found it....ICS 950202...and selected it. In the app, I'm confronted with difft "tray" settings...the first having an FSB of 66.7, tray 2=100, 3=100.9, 4=103. Current freq shows 1992.6Mhz (default is below 2!!)
App tells me to use Fine Tuning for this PLL. I go to it and adjust freq upward and save. My current freq doesn't change??? I reboot and still no change. Am I missing something? I'm not getting error messages.
TIA;

Its quite possible that your machine cannot be overclocked at all. Whether software or BIOS.
Also, FSB is not the same as the overall speed of your computer. You have a 2ghz processor which is likely using the 400mhz bus. Since the P4 bus is quad pumped, that means your running 100mhz (100 x 4 = 400mhz). So basically the stock setting for your chip would be "tray 2".
I haven't used that software, so I don't much else about it or why it isn't working properly for you. _________________ TestOC PC

Unfortunately HP versions of motherboards are seldom anything like the retail versions of those boards. A lot of times I think that HP and Compaq go out of their way to make sure that the computers aren't upgradeable so that people have to go buy a new computer. _________________ __________[(Crayola)]>_____________

Thanks Joe. What software do you use? Since I'm new to this, I'm certainly not married to the one I'm trying...it just seemed popular.
And yes Alex, from the online searches I've done, it does seem that the HP's are difficult to O/C but I thought sure I had it when the PLL checked out with the choices in CPUCool. Rats.
If I can't do it in s/w or switches, etc....I did notice from the benchmark/cpuid s/w I've run that this motherboard supports chips up to 2.4Ghz (well...the retail version anyway.) Any comment on whether that might be worthwhile instead of O/C? Looks like they can be had for about $160. Will my piggish memory bottleneck the system anyway?
I'm hesitant to buy a new machine now...like many of you, I'd like to see where the 64 bit stuff goes. I'm an engr and do some pretty hardcore modeling on my machine (optimization work...run times often overnight on big solves) so 64 bit may be worthwhile!!
Thanks again!! |

I don't use any software for overclocking. Software OC'ing is for when your desperate and have no other options (which is your situation).
1) You could probably throw a 2.4ghz chip in that box, but it can't be the 2.4C (800 fsb). It would have to be a 400mhz version to work correctly (which is the regular 2.4).
2) I'm not sure you'll see a gain going from 2ghz to 2.4ghz when your bus is only 400mhz and your using regular sdram.
I think your best bet is just to wait and see about AMD's 64-bit Athlon and Athlon FX (FX is the better version). _________________ TestOC PC

Thanks again Joe. Looks like I'm on the bench for now. I'll will not be buying a retail box next time; of that you can be sure!
So...when I'm ready and start shopping for components...I suspect y'all will hear from me. Great site and thanks for the intel. |
