Hi,
I have a few questions regarding case fans. I want to add a few case fans to my PC to start some overclocking but am unsure about how to go about it.
My PC case does not provide ample space for a front fan. It already has a space for a 80mm rear exhaust fan. My case is shown on this page (except mine has an extra bay:

I was thinking of adding a:
-high speed 120mm fan on the side
-an 80mm exhaust fan for the rear
-an 80mm exhaust fan for the top
Does this seem appropriate? Or would there be a better configuration for case fans.
I am open to any suggestions or thoughts. Thanks heaps.

It certainly sounds appropriate AP81, What kinda case do yuo have? if it's a standard mid size 18" case, then i think yuo won't need a 120mm fan, a 80mm will do due to the size of the case and the limited space you have.
Have you thought of how yuo gonna connect the fans together? Through a box preferably? I have a box that is connected to one of the power cables from the PSU, then i just stick the black and red cable of the fan in the box with those wire clips..not sure of the correct term of those, but yuo can pick em up at either Radio Shack, or probably Canadian Tire, or any Electronics store, best ask around your area.
I used a Dremal to cut the holes on my case, but if yuo do so, make sure yuo mark all the places right, there is absolutely NO room for mistakes, yuo cut it, it'll be like that..just trace the diameter of the fan, and trace the holes for the screws as well on the INSIDE of your side panel and the top, and always cut from the inside, that way yuo won't see dark spots from the burning metal on the exterior.
Another thing is how long have you had the case? If it's still under warrentee, i suggest yuo not touch it yet, cuz IF anything happens, you can still exchange it either than cutting holes, isntall your fans then realize there's something wrong with the case, that will be bad.
If you have any other questions, jsut gimme a shout, i'll be happy to answer ya.

You need to get an intake on that system. A top 80mm for exhaust isn't bad, but I woul probably add an 80mm on the side that is purely for intake. I would look at putting it toward the bottom front, this way the air has time to move through the case before being pushed out. _________________ TestOC PC

Seeing that you are going to be putting a rear and top 800mm fan, it would be best to install a 120mm on the side to properly intake enough air for the exhaust's to work properly. _________________ Owner & Administrator

Okay, I pulled the case to pieces last night. After taking off the front panel, I found that there was and 80mm case fan space already cut (located behind the power switch. Seems strange that there would be one there.
I am going to go to the electronics shop and buy a couple of buttons and LED lights and relocate the power/HDD leds, power and reset button to an empty panel under my CD ROM. That way I can use the front for an intake fan.
My plan is mpw this:
-80mm front case fan
-80mm side case fan (situated at bottom front of panel)
-80mm rear exhaust fan
-80mm top exhaust fan
That way I will have two blowing in and two blowing out and out and slightly better airflow.
Does that seem a little better?
Thanks all for your input. |

Put the side intake blowing directly on the center of the motherboard. _________________ Owner & Administrator
