The Thermalright XP90 would be a good choice. You can get an adapter
for it that will fit the 775 socket. They recommend the medium range panflo M1A 92mm fan- 2450RPM, 48cfm, 30 dba. Or you can go slower or faster depending on your needs. About $38.00 us + fan. google Xp 90 for reviews.

Quoted for very good advice.

another good choice would be the Swiftech MCX775-V

it would work, but I dont think that it would give you the performance that you are looking for.

I like the fact that it doesnt just blow on your cpu it blows beside it and around the case.
My friend is an I.T technitian and he has the same chip as me and he uses the gigabyte. I thought i should consult you guys aswell :). And it looks pretty good also.

I am using a Scythe Kamakiri heatpipe on my LGA775 3.4GHz P4. It does quite well- working very quietly and efficiently. Plus, it has a nice solid mounting system to hold it's heft. Too bad there aren't a whole lot of options out there for this socket right now.

No diggity! There are VERY few options for the 775 chipset. Too bad for the aftermarket manufacturers b/c it will be a huge market. That thing runs warm enough to make grilled cheeze. Oh yeah, my system isn't exactly runnning yet (HD in transit....fedex), but its rockin the stock HSF.

We want benchies when you get it going eh Sally
I looked ub the gigabyte HSF, it seems quite good, Asus also has one that looks OK to but I haven't tested either so I can't say if they work or not.

What thermal paste are you using?

Do you have the fan control properly set in the bios?

What thermal paste did it come with?

Did you use paste or just the thermal pad?

How much did you use?

Did you spread it out properly?

Perhaps I am misunderstanding you, but you're saying you don't like the stock hsf because it gets hot? If it's getting that hot, it is doing what it is supposed to do. The round fan that comes with the newer LGA775 are actually fairly decent, especially for being stock. Perhaps you could give us some temps to let us know what she is running at.
