|
|
I just built my first computer last night and its running fine from what I can tell but I'm not sure how to burn in the computer to see if there are any problems.
I'm guessing there is a program that I can run to do this for me but I have no idea which one to use or were to get the download. My operating system is windows xp home edition.
Thank you for any advise. |

google search for prime95
install it select the "Just Stress Testing" option. run this for as long as you can stand to, at least 12 hours
If you have a Hyper-Threading P4, you should run two instances of this by installing a second one as prime95b or something like that. this will run an HT CPU at 100%
Keep an eye on CPU temp for the first hour or so to make sure everything is runnin' ok _________________ Yeah....... ok |

Yeah thats about right. You are supposed to run Prime95 for about that long to get a good idea of stability.
Personally, I have not heard of "Ontrack" and would recommend sticking with the original suggestion of Prime95. Its one of the most trusted stress testers of this site. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

Its always nice to try something new, but prime95 is tried and tested.
We should give Ontrack a shot. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Ontrack is quite good, I used to use it to burn in the PCs I used to sell but then I discovered prime95......
Prime95 is much better IMO. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

| I'm not familiar with the practice of burning computers. What's it for? Should I have done it? |

Some people believe that burning in a processor or a whole computer at stock speeds will yeild better overclocking results. I'm not sold on this, but i do like to run prime95 on a new build to check for stability.
These programs are usually used to test stability and make sure none of the components are faulty. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I agree JW...most ppl will find out soon enough if thier new compy is working okay or not. Running full load is not really neccesary for most. A few games in the first few days will usually tell. And... if you are looking for pre-mature failure in parts...other programs will test (torture) other components more thoroughly than prime 95, which is cpu intensive.
Is the Ontrack software (they've been around for years) free? That is a real difference to many ppl here. _________________ .
