Well, the 5300 is a pci-x version of the 5200. technically a different card. ATI did the same thing with the 9600xt to the x600xt. Essentially a pci-x version of the 9600xt.

OK the card came back. It's a brand new one.

Same test (60 secs of Chimp demo):

Old Card : Idle 77C / Load 127C
New card: Idle 45C / Load 48C

It is a very short test which hardly stressed the card but it proved that it's OK temp wise.

Problem Solved!

Give it a couple days and a few thermal cycles and see if it doesn't improve a small amount.
Sounds like the HS/GPU interface wasn't good at all.
Temps are more acceptable, for sure.

almost sounds like there was no thermal compound on the old card. Great to hear that you got the problem fixed, now to just enjoy the performance of your great computer.

Well my ASUS CRW-5224A has gone all screwy. It's been deteriorating for the past month, but it has gotten to a point where it can barley read any disc (CD-R or Pressed) and no drive (including itself) can read any disc it burns.

The thing is, it's 5 months past its 1 year warranty. Getting it fixed will cost as much as a new one. So I’m buying a NEC ND-3500A (DVD burner). It's time to move on anyway.

Damn I hope my ASUS mobo isn't next..... lol

On another note, I got sick and tired that every application that doesn't support multi-threading cannot use my HT proc to the max. For example I was compressing 3 GB in WinRAR and it was only at 50% CPU (100% of the first virtual CPU). I looked up WinRAR's FAQ and it says it doesn’t support multi-threading. Other programs and games don't support it too so they’re at a disadvantage.

I don't want two 1.5 GHz procs, that one is always underutilized. The only benefits of HT I can see are:

1. On the rare occasions that there are two proc intensive threads running, there will be a small gain in performance.

2. If any program misbehaves or locks up and takes up 100% of the virtual CPU, there will still be another proc for the OS to use, and the computer won’t slow down too much or become unusable.

Besides those two, I couldn't find a reason to use HT. So I went right ahead and switched it off. What do you think? Have you ever tried comparing your experience with HT vs. without HT (not benchmarking wise)? Did I do the right move? Am I missing a huge benefit of HT?
