| Question- for those of you that are using heatpipes on the ol' cpu, do you notice that it runs cooler having one of those ducts on the side panel? Am curious, as most heatpipes don't have the fans blowing down as most coolers do. Debating if Ishould add a duct or not. |

Not quite sure what you mean by heat pipes.... I do know I have a duct on my CPU heatsink and its works great. So I can at least tell you that ducts are functional, I hope that helps. _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

Duct and then don't duct. Side fans vary from case to case . . . setup to setup. trial and error will be your best friend here. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Dude, you need some new friends
Side ducting is a suggested practice for the Prescott Processor...direct pathway for cool air is the logic. _________________ .

The thing is that trial and error won't work. Since the existing holes in the side of the case are above and below where the cpu will be, I'd need a new hole for a duct to work properly. And, I was unsure wether or not it will even do enough good to justify hacking up a new case when used with a heatpipe setup.
Zero: This is the heatpipe cooler I'm going to use
As you can see, the air comes in one side and out the other- not from the top of the sink. Thus a duct may not help. |

Most side intake fans are positioned to blow air over the AGP card area.
as long as you have a good air FLOW through your case, you should be good to go.
but you might try something like this >> http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/frozencpu/duc-17.html << if you really have to have some kind of duct _________________ Yeah....... ok |

Hmm, maybe you should see how the temps are when you get everything all set up. You are getting a prescott cpu right? If so, you might be alarmed by the temps you first see. 50-60C is not uncommon. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Hmmm.. I honestly would not be able to help ya there. Haven't even seent hat thing before. I would suggest mouning a fandirectly on the side of that thing closest to your existing side intake hole. That should be the bottom. Then jut have a blow hole installed inyour case and you will have direct air passage through that thing. Side intake.... CPU fan blowing straight up through sink... Blowhole taking all that hot air straight out of the case. Shouldn't interfere with the front intakes cooling the HDs.
What kind of case are you getting? or already have? _________________ "....Or as almost every word in a sentence; Tweak the tweaking tweakers!"

This is the new case I ordered:
Has a real Lian Li look to it, no?
Anyway- I guess I will just have to get it up and running and see how it handles the heat. Thanks for the suggestions though. |

I've got one last suggestion. In my experience, a blowhole at the top of the case seems to yeild a very nice drop in temps. Not just for the processor, but for the motherboard, psu, and the rest of the components. If you are concerned about temps after getting everything set up, I'd try taking out two of the 5 1/4" panels and putting a fan in there temporarily. It can give you some idea of what a blowhole will do. _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

I think the best way to cool the heatpipe setup, would be to mount a fan directly on the fins of the pipe, then hook the other (hot air side) of the heat pipe up to a fan shroud and duct the air directly out the side of the case. You can make a VERY effective and CHEAP fan shroud yourself. All you need is a pair of womens tights (UHMM, think you call 'em panty hose or something in the US) and some resin used for glass fibre. I'm getting ready to post a little "how to" in a few days if your interested. Using this method it is cheap and easy, also gives a very profesional looking duct that will fit perfect around the heatpipe.
