Wowowow. Hold the phone. So you're telling me, once I buy the CD live for another 50 years, meanwhile Steam goes under and shuts down (because it's a bad idea) and say I want to play the game again when I'm 69 I won't be able to because Steam doesn't exist to 'validate by CD'? What if I want to load the game and play it on a comp that doesn't connect to the net?
This is just f'ing bull5h1t! However, all hope is not lost, hopefully someone will release a crack out there!
I'm furious with Valvle for doing this steam crap.

Although I would not align myself with piracy....I believe they are kind of asking for it, in this case. Sounds like they are taunting the 10,000 geeks if you ask me.
Think I may use the most powerful tool I own...my wallet...if I don't buy it, think they might get the message.
It's a shame also, I was really looking forward to it. Might just have to play D3 again. _________________ .

BTW Z....If left to me...Steam won't be around long.
Next question...So you must go up to steam to authenticate the CD on the first load...what type of information is transmitted to them? I do have rights and civil liberties I may not want to give up.
Has anyone read the EULA yet? _________________ .

Unforunately, no. I skipped all through it too excited to play the game....boy was that dumb. _________________ p4 3.2 @ 3.46, DFI Lanparty Pro875B, CoolerMaster Jet 4 H/S Fan, Thermaltake Silent purepower 480w PSU, 6800gt AGP Vid. card

A whole month? You mean to say that you HONESTLY think it'll take more than a day or two?
Oh, and I agree that having to validate it through steam(and thus needing a net connection for single player) is BS...I'm with Ö, though...I think I'll just wait and let you guys keep me updated for a while...'till I eventually give in to the peer pressure and go buy it anyway _________________

| Maybe masses of emails to Valve about how we dislike the mandatory validation thing could help. |

If you ask me they are begging for it to be pirated! Don't they know that the more secure they make it the more ppl want to crack it! I mean damn, who wants to crack win 95 or 98, its XP and 03 that get all the nasty little crackers attention. _________________ Phenom II x4 955 @ Stock

Ok, steams is really pissing me off!!!
It takes a while to install, then it takes 10 minutes to verify your CD-key after which it says some crap about their servers being busy and they have to subscribe me later, but they do allow me to play the game, after which it takes forever to unlock the steam files!
It's been sitting at 50% for the last 20 minutes. I'm very close to getting a refund!
HL2 is a great game I'm sure, but this takes the pi55! _________________

Okay...what is steam requiring when you activate?
Has anybody tried to load it on more than one compy? As in....when it crashes your system...corrupts your HDD and you need to reload it, will it let you sign in again?
$55 for a one time gaming experience is a bit pricey... _________________ .

Basically you create a steam account with a username and password.
You install the game as normal, then it launches steam (or installs it if you don't have it) and asks you to either enter your steam username and password or to create them if you don't have any.
Once logged in, you click on "Register a product I already own...", you enter the cd-key and it says, "validating cd-key" which takes a while after that it said "our subscrioption servers are busy, steam will keep trying to subscribe you but in the mean time you can still play hl2" or something like that.
It then launches yet another dialog where it says "unlocking steam files" and it has reached 50% slowly but steadily and now it's just stalled. For crying out loud, the game comes on a DVD-ROM (or 5cds) and they need do all this crap. This is ridiculous!
Anyways, my Half life 1 cd-keys registered ok (inc CS1, day of defeat, team fortress classic, etc) but half life 2 with CS:source is taking for ever.

I'll load it completely on two computers. Then i'll find out if single player and multiplayer can be played simultaneously (on on each computer) _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

So I thought I had a glimmer of hope when it jumped to 66% but alas, it is now stuck on 66% and has already booted me off several times with the something similar to the following, "Applogies but the Steam servers are busy right now please try again later."
Well excuse me Valve, if I'm going to fork out my cash for your games I expect you to cope with demand especially since you know the demand is high for this game!
Or simply ditch Steam. I bought the CD, thinking I can have and hold the physical disc on which this game is stored. However, it seems that that 'vision' is shattered because you HAVE TO have Steam in order to play wether you bought the disc or bought the game on-line (over Steam). Which leads me to ask, what is the point of the CD? Simple. There is none, they should just not make the CDs and pass on the saving by making the game that much cheaper.
I'm really disappointed in what Valve did with this game distribution.
Anyways, enough ranting. Mind you, the time it took me to rant it jumped to 83% so any time now I'm gonna play..... _________________

Yeah, now i'm starting to get pissed too. Making an account doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the fact that i THOUGHT i already preloaded everything. NOPE. Now 3.5GBs of bandwidth have to be used up at about 40KB/s. So i'll probably have the game sometime after christmas.
It started outt saying there was approximately 60 minutes left in the download. Its up to 180minutes now and still climbing. I know my connection is better than that. Didn't they think about the countless thousands that would be downloading via their servers at this time? _________________ JayDubya aka JW Jay JD ^> ﺵ |

Ohhh....this is BULLSCHITT
does it say anywhere on the box that you NEED an internet connection to play?
When I buy a game..Especially one as expensive as this..I expect to get EVERYTHING I need to play that game on Disc. Is that asking too much???
they HAD to anticipate the numbers of people that would be scrambling to activate. Imagine the Dial-up users
I am SO PI$$EDat Steam right now _________________ Yeah....... ok |

I retract my previous statments that all will be ok.
Obviously it won't. I'm still gonna stick with the title of this thread. HL2 is still hours, possibly days away. I've got 28k but somehow acctually got a Steam account registered. I've been trying for several hours to get into Steam but that's hopeless. I've got one of those ATi coupons, but couldn't wait to play the game so I decided to pick it up after school. Looks like I have to wait anyway. This is the worst release ever, for probably one of the greatest games ever. Back to trying to log on to Steam.... _________________ Love Is Not Enough... |
